Conditional Sentences are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. They are used to show that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled. 1. When the condition is very likely to be fulfilled, use: if + Simple Present, will (Simple Future) e.g. If Mr Soames catches the boy, he will beat him. If the boy escapes, he will have a better chance of surviving. 2. When the condition is very unlikely to be fulfilled, use: if + Simple Past, would / should + Infinitive e.g. If Mr Soames were a rich man, he would probably be kinder. If I were the boy, I would/ should try to run away too. If Beatrice knew the kind of life the apprentices had, she would be more sympathetic.
