KUALA LUMPUR: The Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) was yesterday lowered by 75 basis points to 2.5% from 3.25% previously. Bank Negara Malaysia made the decision at the Monetary Policy Committee meeting yesterday, it said in a statement. The ceiling and floor rates of the corridor for the OPR are correspondingly reduced to 2.75% and 2.25%, respectively. The Statutory Reserve Requirement (SRR) is also lowered from 3.5% to 2% effective Feb 1. The central bank said the reduction in interest rates would be reflected in lower borrowing costs. “Given that the Malaysian banking system remains fundamentally sound, the Bank’s efforts will continue to be directed towards ensuring access to credit to all sectors of the economy,” it said. With the heightened downside risks to growth, the magnitude of the reductions in the OPR and the SRR are aimed to be pre-emptive in providing a more supportive monetary environment for the domestic

Prices lower amid concerns SHARE prices on Bursa Malaysia closed lower yesterday amid fears of a prolonged global financial crisis led by the gloomy situation in Europe’s banking sector, dealers said. The benchmark KLCI ended at 873.41, down 6.96 points or 0.791%. The dealers said that regional markets were also lower, mirroring Wall Street’s overnight performance which saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 4% and the Nasdaq Composite Index down 5.78%. One of the dealers said investors, especially foreign players, were in a holiday mood and are expected to go for a long break. – Bernama

Sarawak Energy, TNB take over Bakun project KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak Energy Bhd and Tenaga Nasional Bhd have received approval in principle from the government to take over the operation of Bakun Hydroelectric Project (HEP) in Sarawak. The companies will take over the operation from Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd through a leasing agreement and to develop the associated transmission system, which will see the export of 1,600 megawatt (MW) electricity from Bakun HEP to Peninsular Malaysia and the remaining power to Sarawak.
In a filing to Bursa Malaysia yesterday, Sarawak Energy said the construction of the 8x300 MW generating units at Bakun HEP is nearing completion. Sarawak Energy said a special purpose vehicle would be set up to take over the operation of the HEP from Sarawak Hidro upon full commissioning of the units through a leasing agreement and other related commercial agreements for the sale of electricity to Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak. – Bernama
