The Value of The Arts

The majority of society defines art as a way to express personal creativity to be primarily appreciated for its beauty. Despite the art being portrayed in a diverse selection of visuals, art lives for a deeper value that we often overlook. Art has the potential to tell a bigger story; much bigger than simply looked at as eye candy. Art can assist in promoting a healthy lifestyle, give rise to a new form of communication, and the opportunity to build a stronger education. Art is involved with many areas of study, which makes it a powerful tool in shaping a world of peace and beauty. Art has the ability to become a visual form of medicine. The healing factors of art are completely harmless, but effective, making it a popular method to relieve stress and approach a healthier lifestyle. For example, allowing yourself to indulge in the creations of others shows evidence of reduced stress levels. The catch? When we are met with an art piece that is so stunning, our brains respond by activating our reward systems and releasing a wave of pleasure. This helps distract us from our daily troubles that interrupt our performance in life (mic.com). However, the real deal might lie in the actual creation of art. Along with the benefits of enjoying art, you can achieve a healthy lifestyle by creating art yourself, regardless of ability level. Producing art encourages personal expression and concentration on one’s surroundings (mic.com). This allows yourself to get rid of unwanted thoughts and focus on the present. In a way, art is like meditation. We never questioned art’s healing power, but the truth is that art can be the secret to a longer lifespan.

Language barriers are no longer a challenge with art. Art is a unique form of communication that allows different cultures to build bonds through images and songs (masterpiecemixers.com). Some might argue that it can even be a second language that is gifted to every human. Given that, anyone can understand the message behind art; it is like universal translator. Whether you are artistic or not, when words do not suffice, pictures can clear up misunderstandings; like diagrams, charts, etc. Art is also often a source for social and political inspiration. A story, in written or verbal form, can rouse those that confront it and further drive their ambition for change (masterpiecemixers.com). For example, songs and their own emotional value can reach the other end of the world, breaking language barriers. Art serves as a vehicle that brings groups of people together that share mutual respect and interest for an artist. This ultimately allows people to build connections with those they would not meet through normal means. The education industry relies greatly on the work of art to assist in providing a well-rounded education for children. Imagine how dull textbooks or news articles would be without images. Maybe you have even drawn visuals to compensate for the lack of clear material. Without being aware of it, we utilize art everyday to achieve an easier system of thought. Even arts education, such as music and drama, is proven to help kids score a higher academic performance in school (eric.ed.gov). The arts education is also responsible for creating a positive environment conducive to learning in order to foster higher self esteem. Studies show that students have discovered that playing guitar boosted their confidence (eric.ed.gov). This can become a powerful tool to motivate kids about attending school. Without art, society would be met with a boring education system and students.

Art is not a simple concept and the evidence lies in the hard work it has done to truly make society a wonderful place. Art can help stimulate a happier lifestyle along with becoming a translator to help different cultures build bonds. Much of the education industry’s success can be credited to the innovation of the arts. All these are just few of the various reasons that make art such a compelling matter that shapes one of society’s biggest characteristic.
