Limitations of Standardized Achievement Tests



Standardized achievement: ◦ Generated a major educational industry. ◦ Purpose  Assess an individual achievement level compared to some average. Measuring the performance relative to specific instructional objectives.

◦ Used term as ‘achieving at grade-level’ ◦ Grade level = average performance of some welldefined national norm group. ◦ Have limitation

Serious Relatively unimportant Due to the unrealistic expectations placed on tests.

 

Testing time and Disruptions 

Complaint: ◦ Take up a large amount of class time ◦ Disrupt the school schedule



Relevance of complaint: ◦ The value of the information gained from the test ◦ The extent of opportunity lost



Number of content area tested and the accuracy of each score related to the length of the test.

Time of Administration Teacher wait weeks for test results to be returned.  Teacher should be aware of : 

◦ What information the test scores will provide ◦ When receive the result

Test Scores-Specific or Global? 

Global ◦ A test with broad content area ◦ Not provides the detailed information that teachers find useful



Specific ◦ Very specific objective ◦ Not serve overall measure for a content area





More achievement test need to get different kinds of scores.
