Mobile phones help to reduce the "distance" between small producers and organizations, facilitating and making more effective the exchange of information and knowledge. Through the use of cell phones, social networks are strengthened, the producers are empowered and the cost of access to information is reduced. The possibilities are numerous. SMS Text Messaging (up to 160 characters) can for instance be used for the interchange of crucial local information at low cost - and it can happen virtually instant. The author reviewed the experience of parties using SMS Text Messaging in Africa and Asia. Based on the findings of this research, the author suggests a procedure through which small producers can exchange information by SMS with organizations to gain improvement in the marketing of their tropical roots and tubers. What do organizations need to carry out this procedure? A computer, a cell phone (or modem) and software to both send and receive SMS without connecting to the Internet. Most organizations have a computer and cell phone, while the software can be downloaded for free from the Internet and transferred to the institution by way of any data storage device. The procedure can be adopted by many institutions, including associations, co-operatives, NGOs, independent and community radio stations, as well as rural and indigenous organizations. The full paper includes a purpose of the review; the findings; the procedure proposed, and recommendations for future research.
