Ace Welding

An artistic flair and touch meets metal A

s an artist, designer, and fabricator, working magic in steel, copper, and wood is Ace Welding’s forte. Owner, Gabe Kulp, has an engineering background with an artistic flair. From bridges, gates, railings, gazebos, trellises and arbors to fire pits, custom furniture and sculpture, Ace’s work graces homes, gardens, and commercial buildings from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe. Ace Welding can engineer, design, build, and install your complete automated gate system, or perhaps a fanciful white scrolled archway would set off your Victorian gazebo. Ace Welding is the only ornamental iron shop in the area to offer in house powder coating in their 25-foot oven for a durable, long lasting finish. With 20 years of metal working experience, Gabe is adventuresome in his artistic practices. In addition to his artistic designs, he’s often called upon to engineer and build pragmatic solutions such as large solar panel racks, worm compost tumblers, and straw/clay mixers for the green-building community. (Ask Gabe about his chicken tractor at the show.) If you have a custom piece in mind, he can offer suggestions to help you develop design ideas, or you can choose from thousands of stock parts to assemble what you need. Ace Welding is noted for excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. Ace Welding is licensed by the State of California as a welding contractor, and is also a 10-year AWS member, a member of the Nevada County Contractors’ Association and the Chamber of Commerce. A second year participant in The Union’s Home & Garden Show, Gabe Kulp of Ace Welding says the show has been a great way for the community to see his crew’s creative metal work. Ace’s ties to the community are wide-ranging, from mentoring high school welding students, fabricating arbors and gates for the Nevada County Land Trust’s auctions and contributing to the football field at Nevada Union High School. Stop by and say hi to Gabe at the spring show, outside booth #75 to check out his beautiful display of custom welding work to be a part of your home. Or call (530) 274-8965.

Building Concepts

Keeping up on the latest in decking

B

uilding a better deck has become almost an obsession with general contractor Pete Maliszewski. Establishing his Grass Valley business Building Concepts in 1999, Pete has seen a lot of changes in the deck building industry. “We have weeded through the good, bad and ugly of composite decking,” Pete said. Now with his fourth season at The Union’s Home & Garden Show, Maliszewski is showing what he has found to be best decking products have to offer. Pete feels the Home & Garden Show is a great way to stay in touch with past clients and the community. A visit to the Building Concepts booth will give you access to some of the latest and greatest in composite and wood decking and deck lighting. On display will be a raw deck frame allowing the audience a look from below of  framing techniques and products that make the deck last. Pete will also be showcasing new decking displays built by Building Concepts, one of which will be showcased on the second story of Harrah’s Casino April 23, just days before the show. Let Building Concepts build you a deck that will enhance your outdoor living experience now and well into the future. Stop by and say hi to Pete and his team at this year’s Home Show located outside booth #78 along the marigold pathway.

Sierra Timberline

Logging in cleaner options for heating up your home I

t’s been more than 30 years since Skip Stahmer gave up running a backhoe and began selling airtight Timberline wood stoves from the back of his pickup truck to local folks who wanted to heat their homes. While his store, Sierra Timberline, has grown considerably from a 400-square-foot space located in the front of a Grass Valley antique shop in 1978 to its current 5,000-square-foot building in the home center on Idaho Maryland

12 Home & Garden Show Magazine | Spring 2009

Road, energy efficiency and value has remained a constant theme, one that many customers are seeking out in the wake of rising energy costs. “All of a sudden, we are back where we were 30 years ago,” Stahmer said. Sierra Timberline customers span the population, from people living off the grid, to those that want to reduce their dependence on fossil fuel and to newcomers who want to adopt a comfortable, affordable foothill lifestyle. Be sure to stop by the Sierra Timberline booth at this year’s home show to check out their literature on wood-burning, pellet, and gas stoves in both vintage and European styles for heating the entire home. Current wood and pellet stoves burn five to 10 times cleaner and are up to 30 percent more efficient, releasing very low levels of particulate matter into the air, while gas stoves offer the independence from whole house systems while providing the ease of thermostatic control. To complement your heating needs, Sierra Timberline’s complete line of energy efficient spas, awnings and solar shades, patio furniture and barbecues are chosen for their durability and value. Having been the recipient of numerous industry awards including the National Hearth Retailer of the Year Award in 2000 and consistently voted “Best Stove Store “ in Nevada County by The Union readers for the past several years, Skip and his longtime staff feel that customers can be reassured that they can shop locally knowing they will receive the utmost care and personal service that comes from a smaller community involved business. Stop by Sierra Timeberline’s booth at the Home & Garden Show, outside #32 and #33.

Economy Pest Control

Solving the problem that’s bugging you E

conomy Pest Control, a third generation family business started in Grass Valley by Paul Davidson in March of 1974, serves Nevada and Placer counties with a tradition of excellence.

No one likes to call someone to control the pests in their house, because when they do, it means they have a problem. At Economy Pest Control, it is their job to solve your problem with the most ease to the customer, focusing on customer service and integrity. Did you know that when you think you have an ant problem at your house, you are only seeing a small percentage of the total ant colony? So when you call Economy Pest Control, telling them that you have a thousand ants at your house, (based on what you see) you probably have closer to 5,000 ants residing there. Killing the ants that are seen (worker ants) will not solve the problem, if the ants residing in the nest are still alive. Economy Pest Control uses treatments that allow the worker ants that are visible to go back to their nest and eliminate the whole colony. Effective treatments and service such as this is what has earned Economy Pest Control The Union’s Best of Nevada County 2002-2008 and the Auburn

14 Home & Garden Show Magazine | Spring 2009

Journal’s Best of the Best in 2006 and 2008. The company employs a great group of technicians with some working over 25 years as a part of the team. The company gives praise to God for the success over the last 35 years in business. Being an active supporter of the community, the business is happy to help out local charities and organizations to make sure the neighborhood needs are met. The Economy Pest Control booth at the Union’s Home and Garden shows is always a favorite for kids and adults. With plenty of insects to look at, one might recognize a specimen that had recently taken up residence at your own house. There are always plenty of fun stories and some tall tales shared. Stop by, say hello, point out your favorite insect and don’t forget to pick up your free flyswatter when you visit the Economy Pest Control booth #29 in the Main Building at the spring Home & Garden Show or you can give them a call at (530) 273-1766 or check them out on the web at www.economypestcontrol.com.

Trees Unlimited

Tree removal company helps trim down fire danger

T

rees Unlimited, a local company started by Grass Valley resident Jim Norman, seven years ago, began with one chainsaw and a wealth of experience. From his meager beginnings in the tree removal business 27 years ago, Norman has built his tool inventory. This locally owned business now consists of four trucks, one is a bucket truck, two are chippers capable of chipping 18” diameter trees into chips and there are somewhere around 15 chainsaws, including one with a 6-foot blade. At this year’s spring Home & Garden Show you can find everything that the company has to offer for our forest friends, specializing in tree removal, trimming, chipping, and fuels reduction around dwellings, as well as selling firewood. Jim has his contractor’s license and the company is fully insured. The company has often been used by CalFire, Nevada Irrigation District, Fire Safe Council of Nevada County, and the Consolidated Fire Department for hazardous tree removal and fuels reduction. They hire local folks to man their crews and also use local businesses for sub contractors. Twice a year the company devotes their time, tools and energy to support local charities. For the last four years they have participated in The Union’s Home & Garden Show, twice each year. They have found this show to be a great venue to be able to show their equipment, discuss potential customers’ specific needs and to develop job leads. You can’t miss Tree’s Unlimited at the Home Show with a bucket truck with its arm extended with the 6-foot chainsaw hanging down. Stop by and say hi to Jim and his team at the 2009 Spring Home & Garden Show, located outside booth #44, along the beautiful marigold pathway.

Hills Flat Lumber

Don’t be afraid to save by Jeff Pardini, Hills Flat Lumber Co.

T

here

are

a

lot

of

great

opportunities to save money

in our current economy despite what the stories in the media may lead you to think. At Hills Flat Lumber we are seeing many of our customers taking advantage of these opportunities by starting their projects now and saving a little money along the way. For example, we are currently seeing some of our framing lumber and sheet goods priced at an 18-year low which translates to a 30 percent to 50 percent savings over prices in 2006. This is due in large part to the fact that the lumber industry is relatively unaffected by inflation and is instead driven by the fundamentals of supply and demand. With a decrease in overall building

18 Home & Garden Show Magazine | Spring 2009

projects come lower prices from the mills. So for those people who have been planning a project for many months prices on materials have never been better. Another huge opportunity in our local market is the availability of great professional contractors and sub-contractors. This not only makes the project easier to schedule, but also makes it easier to get information in the planning phase of your project. We have many extremely talented and experienced contractors in Nevada County who take pride in everything they do regardless of the size of the project. Now is a great time to secure that talent for your next home renovation or addition. The building industry is no different than any other … time is money. And nothing saves money on a building project like getting the job completed fast. With the availability of great contractors, sub-contractors and materials there is no reason why you cannot plan and execute your remodel in record time. One Hills Flat customer delayed their complete kitchen remodel until after Thanksgiving due to friends visiting from out of town. Demolition started the very next day, Friday Nov. 28 and the entire project was completed in time for the family to cook Christmas dinner in their brand new kitchen. The project included everything from new plumbing and electrical, flooring, appliances, windows and doors … all sourced through Hills Flat Lumber. Add to all of this the availability of great interest rates and you can see that this might just be the best time to start your next home project. Drop by and visit Hills Flat Lumber’s booth #57, 58 and 59 in the Main Building at the Spring Home & Garden Show or at either their Grass Valley or Colfax stores. Regardless of the size of project you have in mind, we can help you find the right contractor and the right products and materials at the best possible prices.

Plan It Solar

Award-winning company attributes part of their success to education

I

t was hard not to notice Plan It Solar’s name in the news last year as they worked with prominent local developers, businesses, churches, and governments to install the largest solar systems in Nevada County. Some 2008 highlights include: • In April, Plan It Solar put the finishing touches on a solar system atop the new building at Union and Broad streets in downtown Nevada City, now the largest PV system in Nevada County. • In June, First Baptist Church had them install the third largest PV system in the county. • By September Plan It Solar finished Hills Flat Lumber’s large solar installation at their Grass Valley store, the second largest system in the county. • In October, Plan It Solar worked with Nevada City to install three city-owned solar electric systems at City Hall, Pioneer Park and City Yard.

20 Home & Garden Show Magazine | Spring 2009

• To cap off 2008, state data showed Plan It Solar installed more solar systems in Nevada County last year than all other companies combined; and in March 2009 the readers of The Union voted them “Nevada County’s Best Solar Company” for 2008. In addition to designing and selling solar systems, Plan It Solar stays busy educating the community on the overall benefits of solar power. Recent outreach includes providing free Internet-based monitoring programs for a large system they installed at Union Hill School and a smaller system they had previously donated to The Imaginarium. With these tools, the Union Hill installation will be a part of the school’s science curriculum for years to come. Part of Plan It Solar’s success can be attributed to spreading the word about solar via local events. According to owner Martin Webb,“Since 2003, we’ve made sure to attend the local Spring and Fall Home Shows plus the Nevada County Fair. We’re proud to make this seven consecutive years that Plan It Solar has been at all three events.” Featured as a regular speaker across Northern California (and at this weekend’s show), Webb is regarded as a regional expert on the cost-payback analysis of PG&E power vs. solar power, and he says our area has the “Best Solar Payback in America” due to high power rates overlapping with robust state and federal incentives. Home show attendees can hear Webb speak this Sunday afternoon, from 2 – 2:30 p.m., and at a free workshop next Saturday, May 2 at the Helling Library in Nevada City from 10 a.m. to noon. Plan It Solar will be located outside along the main marigold pathway, booth #76. If you’re wanting to know the latest scoop with solar power, be sure to stop by their booth this weekend, and attend a Plan It Solar workshop or visit www.planitsolar.com and find out how to invest in solar with the No. 1 solar company in Nevada County. For Plan It Solar’s fast and free solar estimates, fill out a Quick Quote form online or call (530) 432-3776 Monday through Friday, and Quick Quotes will be e-mailed or mailed to you within 48 hours.

Sustainable Energy Group

A superior solar water heating system By: Ray Darby, Sustainable Energy Group Inc & Kristin Donnelly, Ferguson Enterprises Inc.

T

he perception of solar water heating systems in the eye of the general public is generally poor. That’s because most systems are not only expensive to install, but suffer from high maintenance and failure of the storage tank and collector(s). Bob Pelton of Morley Manufacturing decided to address these problems by manufacturing a system that would be durable enough to withstand a lifetime of operation with minimal maintenance and service. The result was the Morley “High Sierra Drain-Back” solar water heating system, manufactured right here in Nevada County. There have been a number of studies done on the High Sierra since Morley Manufacturing began building their tanks in 1984. Test data and experience with the system has proven it to be far superior to most other systems in terms of performance and reliability. The only components you’re likely to replace will be the pump motor cartridge, and possibly a sensor, after 15-20 years of operation at a cost of about $300. Any other system would also need the tank replaced at that time at a cost of $2,000 or more. The High Sierra tank carries a lifetime

warranty and, in the unlikely event it should leak, it can be repaired instead of thrown away. The solar tank is typically the most costly single component in a solar water heating system and it usually fails right about the time your system has reached its payback point! In terms of maintenance, about once or twice a year the water level in the clear plastic tube on the side of the tank needs to be checked. If it’s a little low, you simply open a valve until the level goes to the “Maximum Fill Line” mark on the tube. That’s it when it comes to maintenance!

High Sierra system with gas water heater There are several reasons why the High Sierra out performs other systems. The collector is empty when it’s not collecting, so there’s no fluid to freeze or overheat (the two leading collector killers). Secondly, the solar tank has a special (patented) circulation loop to your backup tank so it overcomes “standby loss” when you’re not using hot water. In other solar designs the solar hot water doesn’t enter your backup tank until you use hot water. With lower maintenance, low component replacement costs and higher performance, the High Sierra is your best choice for solar water heating in Nevada County!
