THE TEN HEADS OF RAVANA Every year we witness the beautiful and inspiring festival of dussehra. On this auspicious day, we celebrate the victory of good over evil by burning the idols of the great, learned yet cruel and proud king Ravana and by celebrating the victory of lord Rama. But have we ever thought of the fact that we are simply running from reality and that ravana is still within all of us? Certainly this piece is a shocking truth as the ten heads of this devil are appearing as if indestructible…. Let us reflect upon the society so as to know what the ten heads of Ravana actually are symbols of. When we seriously think about them, we come to a flabbergasting conclusion. That is these ten heads are symbols of the evils prevalent in our society. These heads can be thought of as symbols of overpopulation, poverty, infanticides, widow isolation, illiteracy, purdah system, political corruption, caste system, insensitivity and widow non-marriages and what not. The unacceptable reality that we ought to accept is that the heads of this mythological character were limited but the problems of our society are increasing at the rate which is shockingly same as that of our population. It is the need of the hour that we organize a festival that is of some worth and not only a symbol of mere didacticism. It is high time that we start learning something from our festivals. It is time that we realize that there is no use of destroying the noisy and polluting idols, but of destroying the ravana within ourselves. Otherwise the repetition of this part of our great Indian history is unlikely and Kalyug is surely going to show its true colours.
