The Sum The Sum is . . .

On Sunday mom watched the kids so that Theresa and I could do some Christmas shopping in Brighton. Theresa picked up some gifts for a friend of hers, and I bought my gift for Kayla. I also looked around for anything of interest, but didn’t find much. We returned to mom and dad’s house, loaded up the van, said good-bye, strapped in the kids, and then headed back for home.

Welcome to “The Sum,” the electronic newsletter which tries to make sense of the Internet. The newsletter is the result of a great deal of thinking about the direction the Internet has been going in over the last few years. Back when I first started developing websites in 1997, a large amount of my time was devoted to transferring printed information onto websites. We uploaded Real Estate listings on a daily basis, and newspaper articles on a weekly basis. Years later, we do so many things on a computer that even the simplest printed items—such as brochures and flyers—exist in electronic form at some point.

Two Days before Christmas We weren’t planning on leaving for Marlette until Tuesday, but changed our plans after we heard that more snow snow was coming on Tuesday night. It was also lucky that I had asked for time off starting Monday, or else this wouldn’t have been nearly as possible. I might have been able to work from home, but still we wouldn’t have gotten things together and the van packed in time for a reasonable drive to Therea’s parents’ house.

My goal in creating this newsletter is to help bring everything full circle. My one question is how will news and information be delivered to readers once content becomes available only through the Internet? There have been several breakthroughs with “offline reading,” during the time that I’ve been working on this project. Two companies that I know of have begun offering a service which combines together content from RSS feeds into a newsletter format which is both mobile and printable.

Even the plan we were following changed significantly after Theresa returned home around three o’clock instead of one thirty or two. We had been planning on being on the road by two in the afternoon. I had managed to pack most of our things in the van. The only exception were the cat’s travel cage, the bathroom bag, and a few other crucial items.

The Sum comes from that longer phrase “The Sum of all parts.” It is, indeed, a publication which consolidates information from several sources into one, concise document.

We decided ahead of time to bring Sunset with us to Marlette. This was one part of the plan which actually didn’t change. I would have preferred to leave her behind where our neighbor could look in on her, but Theresa wouldn’t hear it. She has a thing against leaving Sunset by herself for too long. Our rule of thumb has been that we leave the cat at home if we’re going to be gone for only a couple of nights, but take her if we’ll be away for longer. We’ll be in Marlette for almost five days, so I couldn’t argue

Morgan Christmas We celebrated Christmas with my parents one and half weeks early. We drove down on Saturday around mid-morning and returned early in the evening on Sunday. Mom served an early dinner Saturday afternoon which included turkey and mashed potatoes. We exchanged gifts that same evening. Dad enjoyed the jars of cashews and peanuts, and mom liked the gift cards we gave her for Chili’s and Applebee’s. The hope was that they would use the gift cards to treat themselves.

I don’t mind having Sunset around while we visit. I mean, sure she stinks up the place when she uses her litter, but in between the times when she’s having an

accident or barfing on the floor, she is a true delight to be with. And, speaking of barfing, I wouldn’t have a problem with taking Sunset if not for the fact that she gets car sick.

On December 15 Kayla performed her part in a routine featured during a Christmas Program held at the Mt. Pleasant Skating Arena. Kayla has been taking skating lesson since the Fall. So far she has really been enjoying the lessons.

Theresa woke up this morning with the same thing that the kids had last week. It would have been better if she hadn’t gotten sick, of course, but if it had to happen I would say that she was relatively lucky. When Josh and Kayla had it, they were throwing up and using the bathroom a lot. Theresa’s problem has only been the latter and not the former. Plus, she’s been really tired today. She spent the whole day in bed. I don’t blame her.

It has been a pretty easy-going day for the rest of us. The kids spent most of the morning playing video games or watching TV. I fixed breakfast for them, and then they played some more. Then, they went outside and played by themselves until their cousins came over. I stayed outside with them for a little bit until I couldn’t stand the cold. I wasn’t inside for long before the kids were back in stripping off their snow clothes and leaving a trail of snow through the first floor of the house. I quickly clear up the evidence of their outdoors advanture. Mea and Kayla are planning some kind of Christmas performance. They’ve written invitations for all of the adults to see the “Christmas Kids” perform “Christmas carols.” Uncle Jeff teased them for the way the words were spelled in the note. I loaned the Matrix Trilogy to Allyson last night. She watched “The Matrix” and seemed to like it. Post a Comment
