The Sun

The Sun is, at present, about 70% hydrogen and 28% helium by mass everything else ("metals") amounts to less than 2%. This changes slowly over time as the Sun converts hydrogen to helium in its core. The surface of the Sun, called the photosphere, is at a temperature of about 5800 K. Sunspots are "cool" regions, only 3800 K (they look dark only by comparison with the surrounding regions). Sunspots can be very large, as much as 50,000 km in diameter. Sunspots are caused by complicated and not very well understood interactions with the Sun's magnetic field.

The Planets and the Stars Mercury-Because of a lack of atmosphere, Mercury's sky is black and the stars probably be seen during the day. Venus-One day on Venus equals 243 days of Earth. Earth-Average distance of Earth from the Sun is 93 million miles. Mars-There used to be life on Mars.It also had ice-caps on the north and south poles like Earth. Jupiter-Jupiter’s volume is large enough to contain 1300 planets the size of Earth. Saturn-Saturn has the most moons.

Uranus-The atmosphere of Uranus is composed of hydrogen, helium, and methane. The methane in the atmosphere absorbs red light, giving the planet a bluegreen colour. Neptune-Neptune is a gas planet, composed of hydrogen, helium, methane, with traces of ammonia and water. Pluto-Pluto was the only planet to have been discovered in the Twentieth Century.

The Stars Antares:The biggest star in the universe is Antares. Pollux:Pollux is the 16th brightest star in the sky. Arcturus:It is the second brightest star visible from northern latitudes and the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere. These are some of the stars bigger than the Sun.

The Moon • The Moon is Earth’s natural satellite. • Pluto is smaller than the Moon. • The Moon takes about 27 days (27 days, 7 hours, 43 minutes, 11.6 seconds) to go all the way around the Earth and return to its starting position. • A lunar month is the time the moon takes to pass through a complete cycle of its phases and is measured from New Moon to New Moon. A lunar month is about 29.5 days (29 days, 12 hours, 43 minutes, 11.6 seconds)

Blue Moon The second full moon occuring within a calendar month is called a Blue moon.The last was seen on 31st May 2007.Far from Being a rare event this phenomenon occurs once every three years on average.
