What is Raw Digital Raw file • •
Raw data from camera sensor Metadata (capture data; camera presets on contrast, saturation, sharpness etc.)
Raw files come in propriety formats .NEF)
All Raw files share the same • •

Raw – the BIG picture
Camera Sensors and Data •
Raw captures are Grayscale • •
•
Raw captures need to go through demosaicing •
•
Luminance data Color information
Mosaic sensors record color by color filters
Raw converters interpolate missing color info
Raw – the BIG picture
Raw Control Raw convertors also control all of the below: Tone
Noise
Color rendering
Sharpening
White Balance
Antialiasing
Output to chosen color space, bit depth
Exposure and Linear/Non-linear data
Exposure and Linear/Non-linear data
Linearity Digital sensors perform Linear capture Working color spaces are between gamma 1.8-2.2 (nonlinear) Our senses are non-linear Tone-mapping Expose to the Right
Exposure and Linear/Non-linear data
Linearity Digital sensors perform Linear capture Example: A 12 bit raw file (212 = 4096 levels)
Graphic taken from Real World Camera Raw CS3 book
Exposure and Linear/Non-linear data
Exposure Underexpose • •
Wastage of bits from digital capture Introducing noise into shadows/midtones
Overexpose • •
Risk blowing out highlights Adobe Camera Raw plug-in can rescue blown highlights

Raw vs Jpeg
Raw vs Jpeg
Raw vs Jpeg Raw
Jpeg
Full control (limited for exposure, focus and ISO)
Limited by in-camera pre-sets.
Choice of color space for output
Usually limited to sRGB or Adobe RGB
12/14/16 bit capture
8 bit capture
Huge room for extensive editing
Fairly limited editing capabilities
Freedom to re-interpret all camera controls, White balance, sharpening, contrast etc
“Baked” settings
Raw vs Jpeg
Woes of Edits EVERY edit in photoshop is destructive. Posterisation and Detail loss will occur. These problems show themselves more in a 8 bit file than a 16 bit file It is not the end of the world!
Raw Limitations
Raw Limitations
Downsides to Shooting Raw 1)
Time spent processing images vs time spent shooting more images
4.
Large file sizes
6.
Non-universal format raises issues of longterm support

Why people use it 1)
Universal
3)
Industrial–strength features
5)
Integration with Photoshop (continuous workflow)
