THE IDOLATRY OF JEWELRY DASKALA~~Tessie & Juvy

THE USE OF JEWELRIES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT Personal beautification

“Make Aaron some beautiful clothes that are worthy of a high priest.”--- Exodus 28:2

Currency “When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels.”--Genesis 24: 22

Evidence of Wealth “Then he brought out silver and gold jewelry and clothing and presented them to Rebekah. He also gave expensive presents to her brother and mother.” Genesis 24:53

Symbol of Social Status & Authority

• “…And I took the crown which was on his head and the bracelet which was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.” ------2 Samuel 1:10

Religious Significance to the ancient Near East 16 The LORD says, “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty—walking with heads held high and wanton eyes, prancing and skipping as they go, jingling the bracelets on their ankles— 18 In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces, 19 the earrings and bracelets and veils, 20 scarves, ankle bracelets, sashes, perfumes, and charms; 21 the signet rings and nose rings. ---Isaiah 3:16-21

Ellen White’s Teachings on Jewelry • Compliance with the Scripture Ellen White affirms the words of Peter in 1 Peter 3:1-6 “Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.”

Avoidance of Costly Adornment Christians are not to decorate themselves with costly array or expensive ornaments. They are to dress plainly, and abstain from display of jewellery and ornaments of every kind is in keeping with our faith”

Inner Beauty • There is an ornament that will never perish, that will promote the happiness of all around us in this life, and will shine with undimmed luster in the immortal future. It is the adorning of a meek and lowly spirit.

WHAT IS THE HEART OF THIS ISSUE? Heart-- The heart of the issue is really an issue of the heart! The love for Christ should be the real reason for any of us to do what we do. The real issue is not the jewellery—it is Jesus Christ Motive

CAUTION!!! So while we are ill with sin, the best policy for most of us is to be extremely cautious how we relate to jewels and precious stones and as much as possible minimize their use. But after Jesus comes and He has cured our sinful natures, then God’s Word says that He will entrust us with these good things because we will then be able to handle them properly.

THANK YOU AND BE BLESSED!
