Why are wolves important to our forests?
Wolves are at the top of the food chain. Wolves keep the population of the old and sick animals in check If wolves disappear, many animals will be affected.
What have humans done? • Humans have hunted wolves for their thick fur. Their fur are perfect for winter coats and blankets. • They are also sometimes hunted just to protect their own livestock and rarely to protect themselves from an attack.
What has been done?
In the U.S.A., the Gray Wolf was under the Endangered Species Act since 1974 when it was almost eliminated in many US states. This brought lots of attention to the Gray Wolf and they lowered the amount of Gray Wolves that are being hunted. In May of 1996, the Gray Wolf finally was removed from the endangered species list.
