A. Power Over Death (Luke 7:11-17) Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son 11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” 14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
A. Power Over Death (Luke 7:11-17) - This account emphasizes Jesus’ compassion for the widow by raising her dead son back to like. - Manifestation of Power over death
B. Nature Miracles: Power Over Nature (Mt. 8:23-27) Jesus Calms the Storm 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
B. Nature Miracles: Power Over Nature (Mt. 8:23-27) —Demonstrates that God has given authority to Jesus to carry out salvation and judgement —Power over higher domains: storm, wind, sea, and sky —Highlights necessity of faith and total dependence on Christ
C. Healing Miracles: Curing of Diseases (Luke 17:11-19) Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy 11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[a] met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?”19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
C. Healing Miracles: Curing of Diseases (Luke 17:11-19) —This account raise the question about the coming of the Kingdom of God —It takes faith to make one experience the saving hand of God at work in the midst of sickness, trials and difficulties —“Your Faith has healed you.”
D. Exorcism; Chasing/ Casting out Evil Spirits (Mt. 8:28-34) Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[a]two demonpossessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” 32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
D. Exorcism; Chasing/ Casting out Evil Spirits (Mt. 8:28-34) - According to Matthew the demoniacs were fierce and dangerous to passersby - The demoniac spirits within the men recognize Jesus as the Son of God. - The exorcism signifies Jesus’ authority in judgment over the demons.
Jesus’ First Miracle: Changing water into wine (John 2:1-11) Before Jesus began his public ministry, he performed a miracle of changing water into wine at a wedding banquet in the village of Cana, in Galilee, which is a region in the land of Israel. Jesus, his mother, Mary, and his disciples were guests at the wedding. The supply of wine ran out, and through the urging of his mother, Jesus had six water pots filled to the brim with water and the water was miraculously turned into wine. The master of the banquet then called the bridegroom over "and said, 'Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now' " (John 2:10, NIV). In the next verse, John the Apostle wrote: "What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him"
