Chaplain’s Message: by Fr. Terry McGuire, C.R. Faith - The Springboard to Hope In every age men, women, and children not only ask “Why/” but as “How am I going to arise from the darkness? This is particularly true concerning a tragic event. I don’t think that one can in this world find a completely satisfying answer to the question “Why?”. There will be an answer in eternity when our minds will be large enough to deal with the mystery of evil because we shall be changed. We can only attempt to answer “Why?” and not be satisfied with our explanation. People will know what to do though they are unable to understand why this is all happening. The what is much more likely to be found than the why is to be answered. The Christian response to the problem of evil and suffering began with the Cross of Christ. A Christian cannot find an answer apart from the Cross - apart from Jesus’ own encounter with evil and his triumph over it, his rising from darkness. The Cross, the vision of Calvary and the Resurrection help us to understand the reality of life that times of suffering, pain and difficulty are inevitable - a part of our life cycle. Trouble and pain are inevitable parts of life. They come to all who try to protect themselves from suffering. The most bitterly disappointed people are those who thought that this brief fragile life was going to bring them joy reserved for the blessed in heaven. The message of death and Resurrection of Christ is this: with faith we can go on in this life by using defeat and loss as an opportunity to challenge God’s grace to help us to survive. When we are weak and confused and when darkness comes into our life, when we feel discouraged and abandoned turn to the Lord Jesus Christ and say send me a ray of hope. At least send your Holy Spirit that I may know in some way you are still with me when all is dark.

Waterloo Knights Inc. Report: by Jim Lehman

Oct — Nov 2009

I trust everyone had a great summer, despite the lack of sun and plenty of rain, and are hoping for a short, mild winter. Our horseshoe leagues are done for the year and all reports are positive about our pits again this year. The installation of lighting in our outside shed and patio area certainly enhanced the safe use of our outside facility this year. A special thanks to Bro. Tom Moser for sharing his landscaping talents in maintaining our horseshoe pits again this year. I would like to extend a special thank you to those who have decided to retire from the Board this year. Bro. Sean McGuire, who has served as our Secretary for a number of years, Bro. Joe Chapeskie, who has been our accountant for as long as I’ve been around, and Bro. Bob Burns, our Financial Secretary of the Counci9l, have decided it is time for younger blood to step up to the plate. Welcome to Bro. Joe Allen, Bro. Greg Kelly, Bro. Jose Prudencio and Bro. Rick Collins for joining the Board. Guys you have big shoes to fill. I would like to re-enforce that we, the members own this facility and it is our responsibility to support and maintain it. Stop by and ask how you can help.

Retired Members Report: by Tom Moser We hope you have had a great summer and welcome to the second half of our year. We are already underway and started with a mass at the Carmel with Father Hauser as the celebrant followed by dinner at Kennedy’s. The dinner was excellent with 60 attending and of course Father was full of his regular mischief. On Thursday September 10th we had an excellent speaker Jaye Kuntz from the City of Waterloo talking to us about senior activities including those activities sponsored by the City. We are always looking for suggestions regarding our meetings or activities. Call me at 519885-6127 and I will pass them along to our program committee. Please remember our chairman Wayne Lackenbauer who is re-couperating from surgery at home. Hope to see you at our meetings. Upcoming events: October 8 - Oktoberfest with Larry Dahmer October 22 - Three Men & A Tub Country Music November 12 - Remembrance Day Mass November 26 - Horse Race Game December 10 - Christmas Party

To all retired member of the Knights. If you and your spouse, widow, widower would like to enjoy a fun filled afternoon, seriously consider joining the K of C Retired Members Club. We meet every second Thursday from 1:30 - 4:30.

Happy Thanksgiving Charity Golf Tournament Report: by Bro. Jim Lehman On Sunday, August 30th, 115 golfers teed off at our 21st Annual Golf Tournament in memory of Peter Tonner at Foxwood Golf and Country Club. Every golfer received a prize and enjoyed a steak dinner at the hall after golfing. We were able to raise approximately $12,000 for our charity. Again this year the recipient of our funds will be Dog Guides Canada which will use the funds to provide a guide dog for a child with a physical disability. A big THANK YOU to all our sponsors for supporting the tournament, to all the Brother Knights, too many to list, for making this major event a success. I would like to thank the golf tournament committee - Tom Moser, Ian Faulds, Lorne Heldman, and John Van Osch for their hard work. A special thanks to Mike Girodat for his efforts Mark August 29th on you calendar for next year.

Family Fun Day 2009

Oct — Nov 2009

On June 14th, the Waterloo Knights hosted a successful Family Fun Day. There was an estimated 75 people that enjoyed some company and food on our patio, and participated in races in our field. Last, but not least, they enjoyed dunking our guests of honour in our dunk tank. The dunking fun began with PGK Greg Paupst donning the trunks and taking the first plunge within minutes. Other notable members taking a turn in the tank were: PGK Chris Kleisath, Greg Kelly, and GK Martin Hickey. Thanks to all of those that volunteered – you made the day successful!

Next year: Bigger and better!

On Father’s Day – June 20 , 2010 we will invite all interested Waterloo parishes to join us on our grounds for the Waterloo Knights Family Fun Day and Parish BBQ. The Grand Knight and myself will be approaching the local pastors in the near future. Your help is needed! Your help is needed during the planning phase to ensure that we are providing the type of event that you, the members, want to participate in. A steering committee is being assembled and you can play an important part – whether that's sharing your ideas, or acting as a parish liaison. If you are interested in helping, please contact Jamie Jewer at 519-884-6010 or email [email protected].
