More than five years in the making, this photographic tour de force explores four centuries of architecture in the Empire State. From Hudson Valley mansions and New York skyscrapers to Adirondack Great Camps and cobblestone structures. This program will guide you through the process of the book’s creation, everything from site selection to cataloging the vast inventory of images to the final printing process. ANDY OLENICK has been fulfilling assignments nationally in commercial, magazine, corporate, and industrial photography including illustration, annual reports, advertising, and architecture. He created the superb photographs for the book, 200 Years of Rochester Architecture and Gardens, and is photographing sites along the Erie Canal for a book to be published in the year 2000. His studio, Fotowerks, Ltd., is in the heart of a Rochester historic district and is located in the (cont’d p.3) Book will be available for sale & autograph from the authors.

April’s Program Made in Rochester by Donovan Shilling A display and presentation of some of the hundreds of products manufactured in Rochester. Shinola, SenSen and dozens more of the unusual and common items made in Rochester, NY were known and used throughout the nation and the world. Donovan Shilling, a native of Fairport, NY and a retired teacher and school principal, has written over 150 accounts of the characters, places and events in Rochester's colorful past. His stories are upbeat, appealing to all ages and leave his readers thinking "Now, isn’t that interesting?" or more often, "Hey, I didn't know that!".

"President's Message" Rumor has it that Murphy's Law "If anything can go wrong, it will" was born at Edwards Air Force Base in 1949. It was named after Capt. Edward A. Murphy, an engineer working on an Air Force Project. One day, after finding that a transducer was wired wrong, he cursed the technician responsible and said, "If there is any way to do it wrong, he'll find it." His project manager kept a list of "laws" and added this one, which he called Murphy's Law, and the rest is history.

Attention Docents! Save the Date! We are planning an enrichment tour and luncheon at the Adams Basin Inn on May 18 th for all docents and the curatorial committee. The historical inn, now a B&B, was built in the early 1800’s and is located on the Erie Canal. This is a unique opportunity for us. The cost will be $15.00—More info to follow in April. It sure looks like Capt. Murphy’s law was still alive and well during the preparation and delivery of the JanFeb issue of the Corinthian. Because of some technical and printing issues, postal regulations, the holidays, and the fact that the Post Office took more than two weeks to deliver it, no one received the Corinthian until at least a week after our January program. Besides some of you not getting the news, the evening of the program turned out to be one of the stormiest evenings of the season.

―Here Comes the Bride‖ The honor of your company will be our pleasure at the Greece Historical Society on March 29 th for the opening of ―Here Comes the Bride‖. We’ve created a wedding filled with reverence for the past. A view of our bridal finery will be on display. Wisps of old lace and gowns perfect for a romantic dream wedding will bring back weddings of the past. See things old, new, borrowed and blue.

The good news is that 80 people did show up to hear Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner give an inspiring and informative lecture on the Iroquois influence on the women’s rights movement. For those that missed the program, it was recorded by local cable channel 12 and will be broadcast sometime in the future. A DVD of the program is also available for a small fee from Channel 12. Call 227-7710 for information about obtaining a copy.

With artful touches, a wedding cake and bouquets, come share the joy of our past bride’s big day. Our purpose is to create that personal wedding day beginning at home. We don’t charge, but donations are always welcome.

Our volunteers do their best to get your Corinthian Newsletters to you on time so you can keep up-to-date with our activities, but sometimes Murphy’s Law is more powerful than our efforts. Besides our Newsletter, watch the Democrat & Chronicle’s “Our Towns” section, the Greece Post, the Suburban News and our own web-site for news about the Greece Historical Society and Museum.

“From the Desk of the Executive Director “ This year the Greece Historical Society is celebrating its 40 th birthday. We were chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 1979! We moved into 595 Long Pond Road in 1989 and Newcomb Hall, our exhibit hall, opened in 1995. What’s next? Tell us what you would like to see or learn about in the future. In April, May & June a ―Here Comes the Bride‖ exhibit by Vi White and her committee will present a beautiful bridal exhibit including vintage bridal clothes; some will be available for purchase. May 16th is the Blooming Good Plant Sale by our talented garden clubbers in Greece. It is from 9 AM until noon and the Donut Coffee Shop is ready early! Our museum shop will be open – so come on in! June 20th is the date for Greece Performing Arts Home and Garden Tour. They will have their fabulous Garden Sale at our place from 10 am – 4 pm, along with our own special sales in the Museum Shop. The Strawberry Festival is Saturday, June 27th, 12-5 pm. The weekend date is a new idea to allow more families to attend. We will have music in addition to entertainment for the children. The shortcakes will be delicious with Greece grown berries and our food booth will serve picnic foods. Anyone with a 40th June birthday qualifies for one free shortcake. Ticket information will be available in May. Please come and enjoy these events. It is a great time to visit and see our Greece Museum. Lorraine Beane

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

RICHARD REISEM has written eleven books since retiring from Kodak. The books cover diverse subjects concerned with history and architecture, including Erie Canal Legacy, Classic Buffalo, and 200 Years of Rochester Architecture and Gardens in collaboration with Andy Olenick. Richard was graduated from Iowa State University with major studies in architecture, history, and journalism; he lives in an 1868 Gothic Revival house in Rochester.

It has been a wonderful year for our Museum Shop. We have recently received a grant from Wal-Mart that has enabled us to purchase a large quantity of our book 8 Miles Along the Shore. This has made it possible for us to lower our price for both the paperback and hardcover books. We have received many requests for Greece items as well as books on local history. Please continue to suggest items that you'd like to see in our Shop. It keeps everyone coming in again to see what's new. Our Museum Shop depends on volunteers for your weekly visits as well as our special events. Too often these volunteers are taken for granted and remain nameless. I would personally like to extend a sincere ―Thank You‖ to the following volunteers for their help: Lois Janiak, Pat Palumbo, Peg Paradise, Sandy Peck, Betty Raymond, Betty Schmidt, MaryLou Straub, Lee Strauss, Ann Woods, and Roberta Young. More Greece History TRANSPORTATION EXHIBIT TO OPEN MARCH 8TH ―200 years of travel in Greece by land, lake, river and canal‖ Three Transportation Questions: What would be the preferred mode of transportation in the winter of 1809? Why were there two other canals before the present Erie Canal? What street in Monroe County had the first electric trolley? For the answers to these questions, visit our new exhibit in our Museum. The Museum Committee has been busy for months preparing mounts, borrowing interesting artifacts and mounting panels about shipping on the lake, river and canal. The railway and electric trolley lines, road travel from oxen to horse, stage coach to omnibus and on to the Ford Model “T” will be on display as well. Come in and see this fascinating semi permanent display, beginning March 8th. Created by Don Stilson over a period of twenty years, his model has been displayed at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. Don is the curator of the Parma-Hilton Historic Society. Don't miss this little "GEM".... It gives an amazing glimpse into the numerous type of similar shops that once flourished in the earlier Rochester area.

Greece Volunteer Ambulance (GVA) is celebrating 50 years of faithful service to the Greece community. Dean MacGregor of the GVA, with assistance from our Historian’s Office, assembled a small display honoring their anniversary and service to the people of Greece.
