DEPRESSION Depression is far more common than most people realize: two out of ten Americans are clinically depressed and as many as 23% of all women have at least one major depressive episode in their lifetime. Those who suffer from major depression cannot just “snap out of it”. It interferes with sleep, appetite, self-image, and attitude. Below is a list of symptoms of depression. If five or more of these symptoms last for more than two weeks or are interfering with school or family life so that pain and problems often outweigh pleasure it’s time to get a professional diagnosis. MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES Westbrook Health Services Westbrook Health Services, a community behavioral health center, provides treatment for mental health, substance abuse, and developmental delays. They base their work on the proven idea that care is enhanced when people are able to go about their lives with the smallest amount of disruption from treatment. Outcomes and economics prove the effectiveness and efficiency of community-based care. They have found that tailoring their organization to their clients’ needs meant having groups that specialize in different areas of care. They have divisions focusing on substance abuse, mental retardation and developmental disabilities, mental health, community supports, and outpatient therapy. Intensive out patient therapy for adults and children assists the individual in resolving or stabilizing mood disorders, anxiety disorders, relationship problems and many other individual or family concerns. A certified psychiatrist provides psychiatric evaluations and prescribes medication as needed. Psychological evaluations are available as well as assistance with psychiatric hospitalizations. Emergency services are available 24 hours/day by calling the crisis line.
