Thai Oil Refinery Explosion

What happened :

Fire & Explosion happened in Thai oil refinery, Bangkok ( Thailand)

When :

December 2, 1999.

Damage happened : 7 Fatalities. 13 Seriously injured. 150,000 barrels oil destroyed. $ 22.3 million property damage. Thousands of people flee their houses.



Lessons learnt : Root cause : Ope rat or' s neg ligence According to police, Charnarong, who was working at the oil tank control room at the refinery on the night of the blast, had left a valve on one tank wide open when it was being filled. Oil that overflowed from the

tank was ignited by a car engine started by staff members who tried to leave the area when they noticed the overflow.

Always keep a track of activities during the shift. Never start / stop vehicles or electric motors near the gas cloud or oil spill.
