LABOR WASTE, INEFFICIENCY & MISMANAGEMENT
LABOR CONSULTANCY COST HIGHEST IN HISTORY The Rudd Labor Government has spent more on consultants than any Government in Australian history—more than $500 million since coming to office! This is despite Labor’s Lindsay Tanner MP, then Shadow Finance Minister, promising a $395 million cut in the use of consultants leading up to the 2007 election.
Australian Financial Review 18 Feb 2009
Labor is also set to top $500 million on consultants in the 2008/09 financial year alone ‐ which is equal to employing 5600 public servants for one year.
This is hypocrisy in the extreme.
The Government’s AusTender Website (www.tenders.gov.au) confirms the wasteful and hypocritical approach to managing our economy used by the Rudd Labor Government.
The website also confirms the Government’s slack reporting regime where Departments consistently report weeks, and sometimes months, past their due date.
The Government also has no system to actually track costs as they are being spent. It is no surprise that the Government is failing so miserably to cut the cost of consultancies.
The Government’s own website also points to the fact that nearly one third of the consultants are appointed by ‘direct engagement’ rather than through an open tender. It smacks of jobs for the boys.
Despite Labor’s commitment before the election to reduce expenditure on consultants by almost $400 million they now try and justify expenditure in excess of $500 million per year! The Government’s actions are a supreme example of Government waste, mismanagement and hypocrisy.
HOW MUCH MR SWAN? When Treasurer Wayne Swan was asked to confirm just how much Labor has spent on consultancies on ABC’s Q And A (18 Feb 2009), he seemed to be struggling for an answer… TONY JONES: How much have you spent, though? WAYNE SWAN: There is a substantial amount spent on consultancies, but it is not the amount that Joe [Hockey] is saying. TONY JONES: But is it hundreds of millions? WAYNE SWAN: Yeah, it probably would be in that vein, yeah.

The Price of Happiness: $1 Million Earlier this year Kevin Rudd gave the nod to $1 million in spending on positive psychology seminars or “happiness workshops".
The workshops were run by US celebrity psychologist Martin Seligman and held in Victoria. The Government was unable to provide an answer as to why an Australian psychologist was not used.

Kevin 747: $3.4m in 15 Months
Kevin Rudd has racked up almost $3.4 million on over‐ seas travel expenses for 15 separate jaunts since be‐ coming PM in November 2007.
Mr Rudd has averaged nearly one overseas trip per month and has spent one in six days of his time as Prime Minister of Australia out of the country!

Labor’s $42 Billion Spending Spree The Coalition opposed the Rudd Government’s latest $42 billion expenditure package because it is not a responsible or sustainable way to run the national economy.
Labor demanded the Parliament’s approval for $200 billion of credit ‐ $9,500 debt for every Australian ‐ within 48 hours of introducing it into the parliament. Labor have given little indication of any plans to relieve Australia from this massive debt.
