RE: TECHNICAL SUPPORTL/REQUEST FOR NEW BATTERIES

The Mobile Monitoring Unit wishes to express gratitude for the prompt response to the needs of the unit. The Spectrum Monitoring System Vans formerly incapacitated with a myriad of problems since installation in 2002 are gradually receiving the needed attention that will put them in top condition for prompt response to any on the spot assignment or station engagement. The following progress has been achieved so far: • Mobile Van 1 & 2, Mobile Transmitter and the Generator were serviced on 13th, 14th & 15th November 2007 respectively • All the worn out tyres have been replaced with new ones(15nos including the spares) December 2007 • Sequel to approval, contact with the manufacturers for technical support has been initiated • The manufacturers, TCI have given us access to their customer support • They have also requested for the last diagnostics of the 8067 processor to be sent to them for possible detection of the technical problems • This will help them ascertain whether they can help us remotely or send a technician

Pending the resolution of these technical problems, the Unit has gone ahead with the scheduled internal training of all the staff of the Engineering Technology Directorate.

The training is still ongoing but we are faced with the problem of bad batteries. This has hindered the practical aspects of our training. We have been swapping batteries to run any of the vans needed. The vans could not be started this morning because the batteries have run down. Each Van has 4 (four) batteries. One in the engine compartment, two auxiliary batteries for the equipment, and one back up at the base of the curb side door. This gives a total of 4x3=12 batteries in all. We have charged them in the past when they do run down, but after running a cost estimate of what it entails to charge all of them from time to time; it is advisable to obtain new ones which will be cost effective in the long run. The longer the Vans stay without being powered the more the degeneration and likewise the immobility for the tyres. The generator in the transmitter needs to be powered regularly. This is done from inside the Van when the engine is running. Prolonged delay will cause air within the channel which will require bleeding before it can start again. The unit will try her best to prevent these from happening. In view of the above, your kind approval is requested for the provision of 12 new batteries for the Spectrum Monitoring System Vans as this will help our operations to be less cumbersome and more efficient. Thank you, sir.
