Wilson Young Teaching Philosophy To be a physical educator is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to live a healthy and physically active life style. As physical educators we have an immense responsibility to develop our students to be physically literate individuals and provide them the tools to beat the odds and live a healthy life. As crazy as it may seem today being physically active and healthy isn’t a focus of a lot of people. So, providing students with the opportunity and knowledge to beat these odds and have fun well doing it seems like a pretty great job to me. The focus for me as a physical educator is to create a fun safe environment for all students to grow as individuals and learn to be physically active for a lifetime. There are three main goals that help to form the focus for me as a physical educator. The first is, being enthusiastic and respectful to all students giving all students the same opportunities to grow and learn. Followed by, trying to connect with my students as well as being a supporter of the student’s growth both in and out of the classroom. Finally, providing opportunities for my students to improve different skills such as movement/sport skills, communication, team work, and problem solving. All the goals are just as important as the last when it comes to what I strive to do as a physical educator. As a physical educator I will use a student-centered approach to teaching making sure that the students success comes first. When conflict arises in class, I will not use an aggressive approach to try stop the issue. Instead, depending on the level of conflict, I will separate the students, let them cool off for a little bit then try and communicate with each of the students to form a good understanding of the situation. A specific teaching technique I will use is making

sure I am aware of what is going on in the class by walking around and interacting with the students when appropriate. Generally, the type of content, resources, and methods that I would use in a classroom would weigh heavily on the student-centered approach. There will always be a general curriculum to follow but in what order or what different modifications to lessons rely on the type of students I am teaching as well as what resources and environment I have to teach with. Making sure that I have the right lessons, resources and methods that will give the students the best opportunity to learn to be physically active for a lifetime. The biggest reward to teaching is making a student’s day more enjoyable. If I can brighten a student’s day or give them a safe space where they are able to open up and be who they want to be well having fun then I am happy. The idea that I can provide that safe space where students can leave some of their problems behind and have fun motivates me to be the best teacher I can be. Another idea that is a big motivation for me is the fact that I may be able to affect a student’s life and ultimately provide them with the tools to live a healthy lifestyle. I want to be able to make a difference in my students by being a support system for them. I want to be the best teacher I can be as well as being someone that the students can rely on for help when they are in need. I want to make a difference in student’s lives by giving them the knowledge to make smart decisions in life to be the best versions of themselves. Giving students the knowledge and tools to beat the so-called odds and live a physically active and healthy lifestyle is a focus in my gym. Doing so in a manner that all students no matter ability level can find enjoyable, as well as being support system for the students. Keeping the idea of a student-centered teaching strategy well setting each student up for success. If I can do those things no matter what situation teaching will be worth while to me.
