TEACHING APTITUDE

Which of the following is the main objective of teaching? (a) To furnish data on selected areas (b) To develop thinking power of students (c) To provide handouts and materials (d) To help students pass examinations

ANSWER

To develop thinking power of students

WHY? Data/information is no longer the privilege of the few; giving notes is both unscientific, timeconsuming and nips original thinking; examination is just one component of education. We need original thinking because a) we still depend on foreign technology b) it takes us to progress and c) when thinking is stimulated other problems are automatically solved

Which one of the following is a good method of teaching?

(a) Lecture and dictation (b) Seminar and project (c) Seminar and talk (d) Dictation and assignment

ANS: Seminar and Project

WHY? Lectures often go overhead and dictation is a waste of time and resources

Teaching aids make classroom transactions—

(a) Jocular (b) Clear (c) Buoyant (d) Funny

 CLEAR

WHY? Being simply jocular is not an end in itself. Teacher should widen the cognitive sphere of the student and present things in such a way that the student correctly grasps the idea. Many have problems in conceiving and comprehending things.

Effectiveness of teaching depends on

(a) Qualification of teacher (b) Personality of teacher (c) Handwriting of teacher (d) Subject understanding of teacher

Subject understanding of teacher.

WHY? Personality and handwriting are not relevant as far as the transfer of ideas is concerned, especially in the cyber age. Mere degrees do not mean the teacher has got a thorough understanding and perception about the subject. If the teacher has a deep understanding, he can put things across calmly and confidently, achieving success. He will welcome questions and counter-arguments.

Examinations questions should not contain—

   

Varying difficulty levels Clearly stated tasks Idiosyncratic tasks Inferential problems

ANSWER  Idiosyncratic

tasks

IdiosYncr atic tasks

WHY? You can’t afford to be too personal in examinations; it is not the place to vent your whims as an examiner, invigilator or candidate.
