Ideas for using Vocabulary Cards. Activity: Word in the Hat Level: Lower intermediate Materials: A hat and a one minute timer Preparation: Copy the words on the cards: sugar, lettuce, melon , green salad, mixed salad, potatoes, meat, French fries, milk, wine,etc. This activity is based on a fun party game. The teacher vill need a hat to put the words in. Choose about thirty words to review foods and drinks vocabulary. Divide the class into groups and explain the idea behind the game. A student from the first group selects one of the words from the hat and describes it to his teammates. For example: lettuce is not a drink, is a food and its. coulor is green... Only his teammates may guess. Once the team answers correctly, they keep the word and the student takes another word from the hat and continues until two minutes is up. When the team cannot guess a word it goes back in the hat. Play continues with the second group. The other group cannot guess when it is not its turn. Once there are no more words in the hat, each team have to count their card. They receive one point for each card. The team who have more points is the winner.
Telling a story Level: Intermediate The teacher shows his or her students five pictures. In the first one a man is walking along the park to the town centre. In the second picture he suddenly sees a kangaroo, he goes with this animal to the police in the third picture. Then he tells the policeman about the kangaroo. He brings the animal to the zoo in the last picture. The teacher asks the student what is hapenning in each picture. They answer the questions writing sentences and speaking about them. Finally the students have to fill the gaps with the apropiate words or expressions about the story.
