TO THE TEACHER OF THIS CLASS Whether this is your first class or the only class you are teaching you are an important part of our team. Each devotion and class builds on the previous ones, so it is important that you hit the aim and goal of your class. Make sure that you are very familiar with these for the class you will teach. The aim is what you are going to get across. The goal is what the student will need to do to receive the truth of the lesson. Please stay within the parameters of the lesson. We do want you to hear from the Holy Spirit and feel freedom as you teach the notes. It is important that you listen to the CD of your lesson. This will give you understanding where we want you to go with this lesson. Your teacher trainer is here to help you and answer any questions you may have. If you have a skit in your class we have someone who will get the props and put together your skit. It will be your responsibility to find out from the teacher trainer who is putting your skit together and speak to them about when you want them to cue in. Included in this packet is the CD for your lesson. Please listen prayerfully to the CD. We believe for a powerful encounter. God is going to use you as you pray, study and wait on the Lord for your lesson. God is going to do great things in you and through you. Thank you so much for joining us and teaching at this encounter.

ENCOUNTER TEACHER’S MANUAL GENERAL INFORMATION • • • •

This is a greeting – warm and instructive. Goal 1. That they would know the basic rules that will make their time successful and know who the basic staff is. Overview – (No smoking, no cell phones, attend every session, don’t leave grounds, etc.) Introduce the ministry team: Pastor, teachers, Human Resource Pastor, and administrators Things to Consider • This presentation needs to be positive and upbeat. • DO NOT come across as disciplinarian or condescending. Notes:

OPENING SESSION Aim 1. To stir faith and give a future and a hope to the attendee. 2. Begin the awareness of God in their lives. Goal 1. The attendee will begin to reflect on the Lord and their life. MOVIE OF YOUR LIFE 30 MINUTES Aim 1. The teacher is to encourage them and lift them up so that they will keep their hearts open. 2. To walk them through their life and assist the attendees by bringing up events that have happened. 3. Bring awareness to the attendees that God has been with them much longer than they ever realized. Goals 1. To soften hearts. 2. In the process of writing or drawing images of those things that have shaped the events of their life, they will have an understanding that God has been there all along life’s journey. 3. We want them to know that He loves them and they can trust Him with their heart. Things to Consider • • • •

Not too much talking. Emphasize that not all of life is negative. This time is to show them that God has been in their lives whether known or unknown. If it is too negative or too emotional, people will shut down.

Needs and Materials Psalm 139:1-10, 23-24 on overhead, space between each person for privacy, and background music Notes:

FIRST MORNING DEVOTIONS Aim 1. To instruct on journaling using Psalms 19 as the guide. Use the example and questions from the card inside their journal. They then will journal from Psalms 139. Goals 1. That the attendee would experience how God’s word speaks to them when you stop, read, and listen. 2. They would show value to what the Lord is saying by writing it down in their journal. 3. Attendees will have a clearer understanding of how to journal. Things to Consider • • • • • •

Check room layout to include; lighting, sound, electrical outlets, and DVD set up. Do not start this session until everyone is in the room with their Bibles, journals and something to write with. Be sure that you don’t take all their journaling time with your instructions… Encourage prayer team and sponsors to do devotions with you. Please make sure you have your Bible on the podium with you. Check with the sound team to ensure that Psalms 139 and the questions on the card are ready to go along with the DVD.

Needs and Materials Psalms 139 on screen to go along with their journal. How to Proceed • • •

Instruct on journaling – teach the class how to journal using Psalms 19. Show the DVD Have them journal about Psalms 139.

GOD’S STORY Aim To show: • How God was in the beginning • How sin came into the earth • That we need a Savior Goal 1. To be sure all know the plan of salvation, providing a time to respond to the message. Things to Consider •

Often in this session people begin to feel the spirit of the Lord and they want to come to the altar and deal with all their life issues… focus on salvation. The altar call is not for issues dealt with later in the Encounter.

Needs and Materials Bring your Bible to the podium, have the DVD cued, cross and chairs for illustrations Notes:

THE CROSS Have the group form a circle with a few chairs and most people sitting on floor around the reader. Aim 1. To let the attendee see from their own Bible the account of the crucifixion. This could be the beginning of some attendees’ understanding of what Jesus did. As the Encounter progresses, they will realize that it was done for them. Goal 1. That the attendee will see the great sacrifice that was made on the cross. Things to Consider •

Must be a good dramatic reader.

All words must be pronounced correctly and there must be an understanding of the meanings of the words.

Please practice out loud several times, being very careful not to read in a monotone.

The reader needs to be so familiar with the passage that they can look at the attendees without losing their place. It is important to maintain some eye contact with the listeners.

Periodically say verse number. Insert verse numbers in your passage so you will remember.

Pass out the thorns, whip and nails as mentioned.

The closing prayer needs to include thanks for Jesus dying for our sins of actions, and of thoughts of the mind.

How to Proceed •

Have them bring their Bibles and notebooks and gather around the front.

The speaker must be seated a little higher than the audience, so they can see him.

Wait for everyone to be seated and have them turn to the passage.

Wait for the music to start.

Pass out the crown, thorns and whip

Read the Matthew passage

Needs and Materials Have your Bible ready (use the same version that their notes are written in (NKJV), crowns, scourge, spikes, music, scripture, and “Amazed” DVD Notes:

YOU ARE SPECIAL Aim 1. Affirms and assure personal value and worth to God. 2. Touch on accepting God’s physical design and forgiveness of self and God. Goal 1. Acceptance and peace with God the Creator. How to Proceed •

Introduce the DVD: o Fun movie you will be able to identify with. o As we go through life, circumstances and things come up in our lives that can shape our identity and the way we view ourselves. o This movie is about a boy who let other’s opinions and thoughts about him shape who he was. o We are to have God’s view and care more about what God says about us than care about what people think about us (fear of man). o

• •

Gods hand is on each one of us and He has created every one of us specifically. Example: potter and clay = you’re handmade for God’s pleasure and you have a purpose for your life.

Play the DVD Close in prayer

EXAMPLE: Lord, I give you my past, my identity, who I think I am, and what others may think of me. Lord, I believe You, that You have purpose, a plan, and a future and a hope for me. Today I put aside what others think. I decide today that I want to please You because in You I am accepted. Thank You for making me this way. You made me. I choose to release all anger or bitterness that I’ve had with You for making me the way I am. I choose to accept myself the way You made me. I thank You that I’m created in Your image. Amen. Needs and Materials Have the “You Are Special” DVD ready Notes:

WHY FORGIVE? Aim 1. For the student to see the great forgiveness that has been offered. If God’s forgiveness is not received and if we don’t offer it to others freely we will live a life in torment. Goal 1. Understand the importance of forgiveness and the consequences of unforgiveness. 2. That the attendee would engage their will and make a choice to forgive. They will begin to write down names of people that they know that they need to forgive. Things to Consider •

Skit: Make sure that all is silent until the tormentors come, as they drag out the wicked servant they will say things like “You are no good, no one likes you, you don’t belong, you are ugly, etc.”

How to Proceed • • • • • •

Read the Poem Read Matthew 18:21-35 and have it on the overhead while the skit is being performed. Give the actors time to act out each scene as you read it. Teach the lesson while moving through it quickly. There is not time to add to the notes. Instruct attendees to write down names on a half sheet of paper, as the Holy Spirit reveals. Have them pray for forgiveness if needed.

Needs and Materials Bring your Bible to the podium (Matthew 18:21-25), lined paper for attendees, poem in the Encounter manual, skit props (costumes, crown, scrolls), actors (King, two guards, wicked servant, other servant, and witness), and Scripture reference on screen. Notes:

PAGE | 11

WHAT ABOUT MY FAMILY? 20 MINUTES Aim 1. To understand that families have hurt, pain and sin that produce offenses and that need to be forgiven. The Bible story is on Isaac and Rebecca (Genesis 24) Goals 1. The attendee will choose to bring forgiveness into their family. 2. To write down family members that they need to forgive. Things to Consider • • • •

Needs to be a story telling time, not an outline with points. Reiterate the fact that good families have problems. We want to keep honor of the family intact because this will keep them open. Brief background, and then get into their marriage quickly. Barrenness in that time was a sign that you were excommunicated from God. This represented a lot of heartache for Rebecca. A personal story may help attendees connect the dots.

Needs and Materials Scripture reference on screen and have your Bible on the podium Notes:

PAGE | 12

BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE Aim 1. Understand that innocent people can be victims of other’s sins using the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37). Goal 1. Have the attendee identify people who have victimized them. Choose to forgive by writing their name on paper. Things to Consider • • • •

This is to be told in story form. Do not touch on offenses with leaders. Tell the story while leaving out the priest and the Levite. Mention Christ was also the victim of others sinful choices and He is also the Good Samaritan who comes in love and compassion to rescue you. He knows our pain (Isaiah 63:9).

Needs and Materials Have your Bible on the podium and the Scripture on screen. Notes:

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED YOU? Aim 1. Wounds and betrayal can happen at the hands of those who were supposed to help me. Sometimes people that were supposed to protect me didn’t. This session is about forgiving and the broken hearted being healed. Goal 1. Have the attendee write down leaders, parents, teachers, pastors, etc… of those who let them down as an act of forgiveness. Then receive prayer at the altar. (Have altar workers standing as proxy for parents/ leaders…) Things to Consider • • • •

Clearly define topics for the altar call. Altar Plan: Innocent victim, church authority, father wounds, and family. During this time all attendees should go over the list of those who have offended them and ask God to help them freely forgive each person individually. Have leaders ready to stand in proxy for forgiveness.

Needs and Materials Have your Bible on the podium and the Scripture on screen. Notes:

SIN: WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? Aim 1. To show the attendee what sin is according to the Bible, how destructive it is, how it should be hated. They will see that the way to get sin out of your life is by agreeing with the Bible, repenting for the sin by confessing it to God, and then choosing to obey. Goal 1. That the attendees would have a great awareness and hatred for sin and a growing desire to get it out of their life. Things to Consider • • • •

You are preparing them for the sin list they will fill out after this session. Sin is a negative topic. Speak with confidence and not with a heavy heart. The words are strong and convicting so your spirit must be full of faith and bright so that they can receive the message. Be sure that if we split men and women on the next session that they have their notes and envelopes with them before they are sent to their separate sessions.

Needs and Materials The teacher must have a spirit of faith and joy. Notes:

PAGE | 15

SIN PROFILE Aim 1. Help attendee identify sin in their life. PAGE | 16

Goal 1. To identify sin by checking the sins on the profile that they have been involved with. 2. Personally repenting for the areas marked. Things to Consider • • • •

Do not read over every word. They will feel “heavy.” Don’t add to their heaviness through negativity. If we split men and women, each group needs to have their notes and envelopes with them. They will need to be encouraged to personally ask the Lord to forgive them and cleanse them from the specific sins. Lead them in a beginning prayer of repentance, give them time to personally pray, and conclude in a prayer of gratitude that the Lord has heard them and has forgiven them.

Needs and Materials Music Notes:

SOUL TIES Aim 1. Bring past relationships (male /female, male/male, female/female; primarily sexual) to God and break ties to the past. Goals 1. Have attendees write down names of wrong relationships and repent and renounce, and break soul ties. 2. Everyone needs to be writing soul ties, thanking God for protecting them, or thanking God for freedom from them. 3. End with tearing up papers into pieces, which represents lives broken by sin. Things to Consider • Let the attendees know that some possessions they may have kept may indicate that they still have a soul tie with another person. Example: jewelry, gifts, letters, pictures, etc… • If the session is split, make sure the group leaving takes their notebooks How to Proceed • Teach the lesson. •

Before dealing with soul ties have the people doing the skit come in and perform.

Then have them write down the names of all they may have had a soul tie with (male and female). They can use initials or pictures or places.

Pray that God will bring back to their memory all that He wants exposed.

Mention that if they were involved sexually with their husband or wife before marriage this would be the place to confess this by writing it on their paper.

If they do not have any soul ties, ask them to write a letter of thankfulness for Gods protection.

We want everyone writing so people will not be self conscious if their list is long.

Pray together with faith and authority, repenting and renouncing.

Have them tear up the papers and let the pieces fall on the floor.

If there is a break here, leave the paper on the floor.

After the break, have everyone sit and write a letter on how to maintain their freedom from these soul ties that were just broken. •

Give them ideas: Is it the places you’ve been? The internet? Relationships? How can they stop the temptation after breaking the soul ties?

Pick up all papers and put them in the envelopes, explaining that as we pick up the papers, these are lives that have been hurt by wrong soul ties. Pray over the broken lives represented in our envelopes. Needs and Materials Skit, paper, background music © 2008 CHURCH OF THE HARVEST 120 S. COLE ROAD BOISE, ID 83709 208.345.0981 ENCOUNTER

PRE-NAILING OF SINS TO THE CROSS Aim 1. To bring understanding to the attendee that it was their sins that put Jesus on the cross. 2. Give instruction to nailing sins on the cross. Goal 1. To understand the cost of sin and the depth of God’s love for me personally. Things to Consider • • •

Use Isaiah 53. Say points on sheet without reading them. It is a good idea to have a short verse on sin and His forgiveness, but be sure to review it with the teacher/trainer.

Needs and Materials Cross, DVD, hammer and nails, cross holders, (hammer and nail person will be selected for you) Notes:

PAGE | 18

RESURRECTION Aim 1. Tell the story of the resurrection, beginning at the cross then showing the power that Jesus has over death, hell, and the grave. 2. Show them how the devil had access to them through the kingdom of darkness, 5 doors and 14 spirits that Jesus has conquered. Goal 1. The attendee will hear that his power (because of the resurrection) breaks every chain of sin and bondage. 2. That the attendee would have a spirit of faith to agree with God and overcome the bondages in their life. 3. They would be excited and ready to be involved in the Freedom session! Things to Consider •

The speaker must be full of faith, bright and happy and excited to see what the Lord is going to do through this teaching… this is not a morbid, weeping, or sentimental time but a bold, bright and courageous teaching

PAGE | 19

FREEDOM SESSION Aim 1. Bring freedom to the attendees from 6-8 evil spirits through renouncing, repenting, anointing and laying on of hands. Goal 1. To experience the joy of personal freedom from the works of darkness that is demonstrated through their participation in the group prayers and responses. Things to Consider • Preparation for this session is done earlier in the day. Encounter pastor will make the final decision on what spirits will be prayed over and assign them, and have groups of two praying for others and anointing with oil. • This is not a counseling time!!! Needs and Materials Oil for anointing Notes:

PAGE | 20

FIRESIDE SESSION Aim 1. To celebrate victory and freedom from sin, strongholds and bondage. 2. To encourage the attendee that they overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Goal 1. To have the attendee participate in the fireside through singing, shouting what the Lord has delivered them from, and putting their envelope in the fire. Things to Consider • • •

This is a victorious celebration of the power of God in their lives. The leader needs to be full of faith, excitement and passion. Read one small passage of victory (check notes).

How to Proceed • •

Have the participants pull their envelope off the cross, then line up and throw their envelopes in the fire one at a time, loudly proclaiming what God has freed them from. Choose a fun victorious song sing a few times before and after.

SWEPT AND CLEAN 5 MINUTES Aim 1. Using the passage in Matthew show the students that they have just swept their house clean from bitterness, unforgiveness, fear, etc. Now they must fill it with the Holy Spirit, His power, righteousness, peace and joy. The attendee will understand that now that their house is swept they must fill it with the Holy Spirit. Goals 1. The attendee will understand his house has been swept clean and want to receive all that God has for him to fill it up so the enemy cannot walk back in. 2. He or she will understand that the power of the Holy Spirit is for them tonight. Things to Consider • Mention the list written at pre –encounter; two kings, two kingdoms. • They can write down on their sheet (under swept- out) what is mentioned in class. • Go over what God has given to fill their house. Needs and Materials Have your Bible on the podium Notes:

PAGE | 22

HOLY SPIRIT SESSION Aim 1. Introduce the attendees to the Holy Spirit by using scriptures to tell the story from the Resurrection to Acts 2. 2. Using the Word, impart faith to them so they will want to be filled with His presence. Goal 1. To have the attendees seek after all of the Holy Spirit they can get. 2. That they would desire His fullness and not rest until they have received it. Things to Consider • •

We do not force people to be filled with the Holy Spirit; we do not embarrass people to be filled with the Spirit. As we encourage them to worship the Lord and be filled with His Spirit , they will be filled. Having the prayer team come in at this point is amazing as they have been praying in the Spirit for hours and it will reflect in the moving of the Spirit among the attendees. You may hand pick some to pray over attendees and keep the rest of the team in the back of sanctuary.

Needs and Materials Music for the altar call Notes:

PAGE | 23

TESTIMONY TIME Aim 1. To give honor to the Lord for what He has done in the attendee’s life and to give opportunity for all to hear the wonderful things that the Lord has done. Goal 1. That each attendee would share what God has done and hear other’s share their story. Things to Consider • • • •

Often after the Holy Spirit session the attendees are so excited about what has happened in their life that we decided to give a productive way to share those joys. This brings a sense of belonging and joy to all. Be sure that no one monopolizes this time. Keep it fun, brief and amazing! Listen carefully as you may hear wrong concepts that may need to be adjusted in a friendly personal way later during the Encounter.

SECOND MORNING DEVOTIONS Aim 1. They would grow in confidence that God does speak to them through His word and that they have something to write in their journal. Goals 1. They would be familiar with how to use their journals on a daily basis. Read scripture, then write a letter, a poem, etc. and pray. 2. To stir in them a desire to become a lover of God’s Word. They would have a desire to have God’s word hidden in their heart. How to Proceed • •

Let them read Colossians 3 by themselves - we want them to have time to apply yesterday’s teachings in a real way... They can write a prayer based on the scripture they find, answer the questions in their journal, or write a letter on what to put off/put on (vs. 8, 13).

Needs and Materials Have soft gentle background music. Notes:

PAGE | 25

DISCIPLESHIP Aim 1. That the attendee would understand that it is his own responsibility to follow Christ and be a disciple. Goal 1. The attendee would give themselves to learning the ways of the Lord and choose to follow and obey Him as stated in His word. Things to Consider •

Being a disciple is not for some special select group. We must present ourselves to be learners and followers. We want to bring down concepts that they may have picked up by knowing or being carnal Christians. We must follow what the Bible says about how to live.

MADE TO WIN Aim 1. Show how we let the Kingdom of darkness and cares of this world affect our approach and view of life as well as our way of thinking, perception, and response to life. 2. Prepare the attendee to be alert to past patterns of sin so they can avoid sin’s trap. Goal 1. That the attendees would understand their role as a warrior and determine to fight, press forward so that they will not fall back into their old ways. 2. The attendee will understand we have an enemy and a battle. Things to Consider •

The lesson must be preached with encouragement, faith and excitement.

PAGE | 27

SOUL GATES Aim 1. To equip the attendee to have a clear understanding of their responsibilities to keep their lives pure and be a safe place for other people to find refuge from the world. Goals 1. That they would know how to live and how to draw lines in their own life. 2. They would see the need to protect their own gates. This will enable them to live with understanding as to how the devil will try to bring them down. Things to Consider • • •

Refer to previous sessions to build the need for diligence in this area. Illustrations and scriptures on screen. It is not about legalism or dos and don’ts it is about pleasing God. Emphasize learning to love what He loves and hate what He hates.

HEALTH AND BODY Aim 1. To teach them how to represent the Kingdom of God in how they dress and how they care for themselves as the temple of God. They are an “epistle read of all men.” Goal 1. For them to see themselves as God’s kids and represent Him in all they do. They should understand that God does care about their body. Things to Consider • • •

Very positive presentation. Focus on who we represent now, as His ambassadors. Avoid attacking current trends or specific people groups.

You must not persist in immorality or other believers cannot eat and have fellowship with you (1 Corinthians 7). Notes:
