Ms. Morcom’s Lesson Plan MLA In-Text Citations and Arguments Date: TBA Age/Grade Level/Class Make-Up: 15-16 years old/10th Grade (Honors)/ Gender ratio is 2 females to 1 male with approximately 60% Caucasian, 25% African American, 15% Latino and Asian. Unit: Social Issues and Action Objective/ Learning Goal: Students will be able to… 1) Understand and correctly employ proper MLA in-text citations. 2) Examine and practice effective arguments in different contexts. Skills Taught: MI Standards: CE 1.3.4, CE 1.4.2, CE 1.4.6 Context: Students are in the fourth week of the unit (day 18). Materials: MLA handouts, overhead projector, transparencies, and index cards. Activities: 1) First, I will give the students a handout with several types of primary and secondary excerpts. I will remind students to give credit when using a. another person’s idea, opinion, or theory. b. any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings—any pieces of information—that are not common knowledge. c. quotations of another person’s actual spoken or written words. d. paraphrases of another person’s spoken or written words. 2) Then, I will explain how to cite (in-text) various types of sources for the purpose of the research project in order to avoid plagiarism. 3) Next, students will practice writing and citing brief sentences correctly, using the handout’s sources. (30 minutes total) 4) We will transition into making solid arguments and refuting counterarguments in the projects. I will explain what makes a good argument and then… 5) Student will find a partner as I pass out index cards with scenarios on them (i.e. Convince you parents to let you attend a concert on a school night). Students will then practice the art of a solid argument with their partners. (20 minutes total)

Assessment: I will formatively assess students’ participation in the partner activity as well as review their in-class citation work to determine their understandings. Resources: Read.Write.Think for letters a-d in activity #1
