Founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868, the Tata group is a global enterprise, headquartered in India, comprising over 100 independent operating companies. The group operates in more than 100 countries across six continents, with a mission 'To improve the quality of life of the communities we serve globally, through long-term stakeholder value creation based on Leadership with Trust'. Tata Sons is the principal investment holding company and promoter of Tata companies. Sixty-six percent of the equity share capital of Tata Sons is held by philanthropic trusts, which support education, health, livelihood generation and art and culture. In 2015-16, the revenue of Tata companies, taken together, was $103 billion. These companies collectively employ over 660,000 people. Each Tata company or enterprise operates independently under the guidance and supervision of its own board of directors and shareholders. There are 29 publicly-listed Tata enterprises with a combined market capitalisation of about $116 billion (as on March 31, 2016). Tata companies with significant scale include Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Global Beverages, Tata Teleservices, Titan, Tata Communications and Indian Hotels. With its pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit, the Tata group has spawned several industries of national importance in India: steel, hydro-power, hospitality and airlines. The same spirit, coupled with innovativeness, has been displayed by entities such as TCS, India’s first software company, and Tata Motors, which made India’s first indigenously developed car, the Tata Indica and the smart city car, the Tata Nano. The Tata trusts, majority shareholders of Tata Sons, have endowed institutions for science and technology, medical research, social studies and the performing arts. Economic considerations will not have priority over implementation of safety and health protection measures.

BUSINESS EXCELLENCE Excellence is a continual quest at the Tata group and Tata companies are supported in their efforts to achieve worldclass standards in all aspects of operations through grouplevel processes and systems that encourage and enable business excellence. 2). INOVATION Innovation — in thoughts, processes, approaches and strategies — has become an important critical factor for Tata companies as they conduct their business in a world without boundaries. The objective is to develop new and relevant products and services and Tata sees innovation as the means to achieve this. 3). FUTURE THINKING  The Tata group leverages innovative technologies, new thinking and breakthrough ideas to stay future-ready.

1. Tata Industries Tata Industries was set up by Tata Sons in 1945 as a managing agency for the businesses it promoted. Following the abolition of the managing agency system, Tata Industries' mandate was recast, in the early 1980s, to promote Tata's entry into new and high-tech businesses. Tata Industries has initiated and promoted Tata ventures in several sectors, including control systems, information technology, financial services, auto components, advanced materials, telecom hardware and telecommunication services.







Cyrus P Mistry (48) is the sixth Group Chairman. He was appointed as the Chairman of the Tata Sons board in December 2012. He has been a director of the company since 2006. In addition to being Group Chairman, Mr Mistry is also the chairman of leading Tata group companies including Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover Automotive, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power Company, The Indian Hotels Company, Tata Global Beverages, Tata Chemicals, Tata Industries and Tata Teleservices. He was earlier managing director of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Under his leadership, Shapoorji Pallonji’s construction business grew. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering from Imperial College, London, UK, in 1990. In 1997, he received an MSc in management from the London Business School. He is a recipient of the ‘Alumni Achievement Award’ from the London Business School, and is a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, London.

 



Group Executive Council The Group Executive Council (GEC), chaired by the Group Chairman, Cyrus P Mistry, comprises executives of Tata Sons and provides strategic and operational support to the Chairman. The mandate of the GEC is to own and drive the delivery of the core purpose of Tata Sons, which is long term value creation for all stakeholders. Its agenda includes, inter alia, return on investment with a long term perspective; support for and shaping of the agenda for philanthropy; preserving and enhancing the reputation of the Tata name; defining and driving a Tata way of working for group companies; and playing a proactive role so that the group fulfils its responsibility as a global corporate citizen. The GEC works closely with and partners the boards, CEOs and senior management of various Tata companies. Members of the GEC have been assigned responsibilities by the Group Chairman, and lead various strategic functions besides also serving as nominees of Tata Sons on the boards of Tata companies.

 

TATA IN AFRICA subsidiary of Tata International, was established in 1994 in Johannesburg as the headquarters of the group’s operations in Africa. Tata Africa has an extensive presence in the continent, with subsidiaries across 12 countries:- South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal, Nigeria, Malawi, Uganda, Ghana and Ivory Coast. TATA IN ASIA Tata Asia has an extensive presence in the continent, with subsidiaries across 4 countries:-India, South Asia, China, South East Asia. TATA IN AUSTRALIA The Tata group has been operating in Australia and New Zealand for over 30 years.

TATA IN EUROPE There are 19 Tata companies operating across Europe, with well over 60,000 employees and a presence in almost every European country. In the UK, Tata is among the largest industrial employers, operating in more than 40 towns and cities. TATA IN NORTH AMERICA The Tata group has had a presence in North America for over 60 years. Today it is one of the largest India-headquartered multinationals in North America, with 11 companies and more than 22,000 employees. Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) SDTT's allocations to non-profit organisations is in these areas: natural resource management and rural livelihoods, urban poverty and livelihoods, education, health, civil society, governance and human rights, media, art, and culture. Allocations for individuals comes under the heads of medical grants and travel or education grants. Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust(SRTT) SRTT was established in 1919 in accordance with the will of Sir Ratan Tata, the younger son of group founder Jamsetji Tata. The Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust, formed in 1974, works together with SRTT JN Tata Endowment The JN Tata Endowment was set up in 1892 by the founder of the Tata group, Jamsetji Tata, to encourage young people to take up higher studies at some of the best universities in the world. Every year the endowment selects around 120 scholars.

The Institute, which offers postgraduate and doctoral programmes, has made significant contributions in the domains of social policy and planning, intervention strategies and human resource development. TATA MEDICAL CENTRE The Tata Medical Center in Kolkata, India, is a state-of-theart centre for cancer research, diagnosis and treatment.
