Preliminary TAKS Scores Released by McKinney ISD McKINNEY, Texas – McKinney Independent School District recently released their preliminary 2009 TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) scores for all subject areas tested. School districts across the state will receive preliminary TAKS data through June 8 under the current timeline announced by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The first administration of the TAKS examination was given in April. For those students who did not receive a passing score, a second administration of the exam was given in April and May. The results of the second administration of the Math section have not been released to the District at this time, but will be released by TEA no later than June 8. The following scores reflect only the first administration of the TAKS exam: A total of 96 percent of McKinney ISD students passed the writing section of the exam with 50 percent being ranked at the Commended performance level. Students correctly answering 90 percent or greater of the exam questions received the Commended designation. On the reading portion of the test, 95 percent of students passed the exam. 48 percent of those students received Commended performance. 96 percent of students passed the social studies section with an impressive 68 percent earning Commended performance. A total of 89 percent of students passed the math section of the exam, with 47 percent reaching the Commended level. On the science portion, 88 percent of students passed with 43 percent of those students receiving Commended performance. “We have traditionally performed very well on TAKS, but there is always room for improvement,” said Cody Cunningham, McKinney ISD assistant superintendent for communications. “The preliminary results show that our campuses continue to perform exceptionally well. In reviewing the preliminary results the secondary schools appear to have made the most significant gains, and the elementary campuses have continued a tradition of performing at some of the highest levels in the state and region. While we are not prepared to speculate on any campus ratings, we are excited about the results at both the elementary and secondary levels. The percentage of McKinney ISD students achieving Commended performance on TAKS is staggering.” The final TAKS exam results and the official campus accountability ratings, which are calculated by the state, are scheduled for release by TEA this August. Attendance, dropout and graduation rates are components of the accountability system. The new “Texas Projection Measure” has also been added to the accountability rating equation this year.

The TPM is a measure to provide individual campuses with “credit” for students who have shown significant academic gain.
