Seminar Geography: Making a T-Shirt

What’s our purpose? ● To participate in a thoughtful discussion on topics, issues and connections based on Geographic themes and concepts, more specifically on the topic of Globalization. ● Every student will speak at least twice (minimum expectation). To earn more points, students will be able to speak more, tap out and take turns speaking, and respond in their notebooks during the discussion. This is a student led discussion. ● Points will also be earned through preparation before the discussion, active participation through a backchannel during the debate, and speaking/discussing/writing. ● There will be teacher-posed questions and questions that students bring to the discussion. You should review and spend some time thinking about the questions that are most interesting to you. ● Note: This is not a debate. Resources - The resources we will use will be given during live class, 3/21. If you missed live class it is your responsibility to email Mr. Gilbert to get caught up. ● NPR: Planet Money Makes a T-Shirt Print Out (Live Class Handout - File - Make a Copy) - Annotate this handout, it’s your document - mark it up! ● NPR: Planet Money Makes a T-Shirt Videos ● Crash Course: World History Globalization I ● Crash Course: World History Globalization II

Questions that can be discussed during the Seminar: General Questions ❏ How is the world getting smaller? ❏ What positive impacts does globalization have on the world? ❏ What negative impacts does globalization have on the world? Three Reasons US Cotton is King ❏ What has changed in the agriculture industry in the last 20 year? ❏ What impact has technology had on the agricultural industry? ❏ Does technology help or hurt the United States cotton industry? What about the economy of the United States? ❏ Are government subsidies for cotton farmers good or bad for the United States? Why the Recipe For Our Yarn is Like The Secret Formula For Coke ❏ Why don’t we make the T-shirt in the United States?

❏ Is it worth it to send the cotton to other countries to be spun into yarn? Why? Who might be against this? ❏ Should we increase the price of a T-shirt? What might that do for factories in Indonesia? ❏ Is it okay for Jockey to protect their recipe for yarn? What could happen if that secret was found out? Why Workers Like Jasmine Are Getting A Raise ❏ What role does the garment industry play in Bangladesh? ❏ How does the garment industry of the United States in the early 1900s compare to the garment industry in Bangladesh? ❏ What drives people to work in poor working conditions for long hours for little pay? ❏ Why are wages important in making the T-Shirt? What does an increase in wages do? ❏ How do the factories of Bangladesh and Columbia compare? ❏ Why might a company choose one country over another for making their T-Shirt? ❏ Are T-Shirts creating opportunities or taking advantage of the workers? Why You Can Send a Shirt Around the World For Pennies ❏ How does standardization of shipping containers affect the price of a T-Shirt? ❏ Could other prices be “cut” to make T-Shirts more affordable? ❏ How is the price of the T-Shirt broken down? ❏ Should we increase the price of a T-Shirt? If so, where should that money go? What is an excellent discussion question? ● Great questions are open-ended and allow for multiple voices and ideas. ● Open ended questions connect ideas. Ask questions that relate to the path of a T-Shirt and the impact that globalization has on you and other people in the world. ● Your 7-10 questions should cover a variety of aspects and ideas. Focus on what you are interested in, but also be diverse.

Example of a poor question: Is cotton grown in America for T-Shirts? This question has a factual response, and lacks thinking. It is also a yes/no question. Example of a higher level question: Does technology help or hurt the United States cotton industry? What about the economy of the United States? This question uses context from the film and reading resources to frame an open ended idea. You could argue that Mr. Flowers’ farm has grown over the generations and he appears to be well off. You could also argue that navigating the fields could be a potential paid job to an American. You could also argue that many Americans work in the service industry instead of agriculture and thus make more money.
