How It attacks the Host
When syphilis is brought to direct contact with mucous membranes it binds with its hooked tip to the epithelium. When it binds to the epithelium the spirochete multiplies and penetrates the capillaries by dissolving hydrochloric acid between the endothelial cells. When this occurs spirochetes invade the spaces around the arteries and stimulate an inflammatory response.
What Happens to the Host as the Disease Progresses Primary(1st
indication of infection)
Chancres (injurous sore) appear, it begin as a small red bump, that leaves a crater with shallow edges
What Happens as the Disease Progresses
Secondary Syphilis(3weeks to 6 months after chancre heals)
Many of the body systems have been invaded, symptoms and sign are more noticeable. Fever, Headaches, Sore throat After lymphadenopathy(red/bro wn rash all over the body) usually disappears after a few weeks
What Happens as the Disease Progresses Latency&
Tertiary Syphilis(3rd stage)
Rare in this day and age because there are a wide range of antibodies to cure it One form is a syphilitic tumor, which is called gummas, which develops in tissues (ie. Liver, skin, bone and cartilage); Usually resulting in death
Treatment/Cures When
syphilis is actually confirmed, large doses of Penicillin G with benzathine/prociane to maintain a blood level that is lethal to the treponeme for at least 10 days. All patients have to be monitored for compliance and effective treatment. In the event someone might suspect they came into sexual contact with someone with syphilis, they will receive a one time long acting Penicillin shot.
How is it spread? Syphilis
is a Sexual Transmitted Disease that can be transferred by all types of sexual contact. Syphilis generally causes sores that can be hidden for long periods of time, while they can still manage to infect others. Infected mother to developing fetus.
Interesting Facts Genital
sores (chancres) caused by syphilis make it easier to transmit and acquire HIV infection sexually. There is an estimated 2- to 5-fold increased risk of acquiring HIV infection when syphilis is present.
