Jointly Organised by Institute of Medicine (IM) & Academy of Brunei Studies Universiti Brunei Darussalam Date: 29 Syawal - 1 Zulkaedah 1429 29 - 30 October 2008 (Wednesday - Thursday) Chancellor Hall Universiti Brunei Darussalam
Background Kampong Ayer is unique within Brunei Darussalam as well as the regional countries ASEAN, being the largest water village of its kind (30,000 residents in 30 settlements), situated in the heart of the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan. Kampong Ayer represents the cultural heritage of Brunei Darussalam. However, such a unique social construction has its own unique attendant problems. The housing is mostly built in a traditional style and the residents live in a high density. Mains water and electricity are supplied to all areas, but mains sewerage is only available in three settlements. Many areas are in disrepair. On the other hand, Kg Ayer is a thriving community with many activities on a larger scale than elsewhere in Brunei (recreational and artisan fishing, kite flying, perahu racing, water taxis, belacan making)
