Notes: Stylistic Elements I.
Style = The way a writer uses language. a. Figures of Speech = Expressions that are not really true, but that suggest similarities between two unrelated things. i. Simile = A comparison of two essentially unlike things usually using the words like, as, than or resembles. 1. ex. Love is like a red, red rose. ii. Metaphor = A direct comparison of two essentially unlike things. 1. ex. Love is a red rose. iii. Personification = Giving human characteristics to a non-human, usually nonliving, thing. 1. ex. The oatmeal lounged in the bowl. iv. Idiom = An expression peculiar to a particular language that means something different from the literal meaning of the words. 1. ex. It’s raining cats and dogs.
