Syllabus for Chemistry I Mr. Laliberte This is an introductory course in chemistry and is intended to provide a brief overview of fundamental ideas related to chemistry and science. The goals of this course include; (1) Provide an understanding of the nature of scientific reasoning and exploration, (2) Give a basis for understanding the chemistry that students will be exposed to through current events, their jobs, and in their everyday lives, (3) Improve problem solving and critical thinking skills, (4) Improve math (especially algebra) and communication skills, and (5) Provide a unified background of chemistry that can be built upon in future courses. UNITS TO BE COVERED Laboratory Safety and Equipment Review Physical Science Concepts Chemistry Computational Skills Chemical Formulas and Equations The Mole Concept Stoichiometry Energy and Thermochemistry Environmental Chemistry Atomic Theory Periodic Table Structure and Bonding Organic and Polymer Chemistry Solutions Gases Reaction Rates and Equilibrium Acids and Bases Oxidation–Reduction and Electrochemistry (optional)
