HDC Patient Spotlight

Julie Cabinaw Julie Cabinaw is pictured here with her 10-week-old son Carssen, who was born a healthy 8 pounds 3 ounces, thanks to his mom’s successful diabetes self-management during pregnancy. “When you have another life depending on it,” she observes, “that sure increases your motivation.” This was Julie’s third pregnancy with gestational diabetes. She had sought out education and information before but wanted to step up her skills and knowledge to cope with the challenges this time around. Her Humphreys nurse educator helped her manage an insulin pump to keep her blood sugars under control and encouraged her with “good pep talks,” she said. Although her doctor had expected that she would develop type 2 diabetes after this pregnancy, her blood sugars stabilized in the pre-diabetes range within a month after Carssen was born.
