"Bhajans are highly sacred. Bhajan singing

1

makes the heart sacred. What is important is that

it

should come from the heart. Bhajan is not just rhythm, tune and beat. You should sing God's name with love. You will see the manifestation of divinity with your physical eyes when you sing His glory with all love. Sing from heart. This is the only way to get Him into your heart. Bhava or the inner feeling is the quintessence – the purest and most perfect form of bhajan singing. The heart of the lord is like "soft butter". However to melt this soft butter, we need to show the warmth of bhakthi and devotion expressed through our bhava. Only a bhajan sung with full bhava can melt the heart of the lord. It is the cry of devotee with the deep yearning for the lord that makes the lord run to the rescue of His devotees. Such is the effect of Bhava. Even ice takes some time to melt but God's heart melts instantaneously when you chant His name with love.” TYPES OF BHAVA: 1. Shantha Bhava (Unruffled feeling): Praising the lord inspite of all ups and downs, bearing all the vagaries of fortune as His play. 2. Sakhya Bhava (Comrade feeling): Loving God intimately like how you would love a friend. Example - The relationship that was shared by Krishna and Arjuna. 3. Dasya Bhava (Servant - Master attitude): Loving God as one's master and dedicating oneself to His service. Example - The path of Hanuman in the Ramayana. He served the lord as his faithful unquestioning servant. He had no wish or will of his own, for He surrendered everything to the Lord. 4. Vatsalya Bhava (Mother - Child feeling): Loving God as one's child and assuming the role of a mother. Example - Yashodha, the foster mother of Krishna can be taken as the ideal example for this form of bhava. Through she had a series of experiences of Krishna's divinity, she preferred to consider Him as her child and adored Him thus. 5. Anuraga Bhava (Loved - Beloved feeling): Loving God as one's beloved. Example – When all of the gopi’s loved Krishna, the love that they had for Him was beyond explanation. They all thought of Him as their beloved, well depicted as Anuraga Bhava. 6. Madhura Bhava (Oneness with God): Radha was over powered by this Bhava. She saw, heard, tasted, sought and gained only the sweetness at all times and at all places. She made no distinction between herself, the nature and everyone around. To her – everything and everyone was God.

2 HOW TO CULTIVATE BHAVA? Whenever a bhajan appeals to us, we usually take the first opportunity available and proceed to sing it during a bhajan session. Is this the actual way to sing a bhajan? The answer is definitely “no”! The song you sing is an offering at the lord's lotus feet and has to be prepared with due diligence, showing ample care and efforts. Here are some steps, when followed will help improve. 1. Select a bhajan: Choose simple bhajans, which would suit your voice. It is the feeling with which you sing that matters, not the complexity of the tune or the length of the bhajan. To begin with, you can choose smaller bhajans that are easy to learn, simple to follow and a pleasure to listen. 2. Register the lyrics: Memorize the words of the bhajan. Understand properly the meaning of the words or lyrics of the song. Learn to pronounce each word the right way. There is no point if your accent is funny and you cannot pronounce each word the way it should be. The lyrics are as important as the tune. It needs be completely mastered. Never use a book during a bhajan session. The bhajan that you are going to sing needs be registered in your mind, not to be referred to in a book. 3. Register the tune: Hear the bhajan a number of times until the tune gets recorded in your mind. Learn the raga on which the bhajan is based. Understand the entire spectrum of the associated raga. Listen to some bhajans or songs based on this raga. This will help one to get the feel of that raga which is necessary for the proper exposition of that raga and in turn the perfect rendering of the bhajan. 4. Learn the tala or beat: Learn the tala or the beat to which the song has been composed. One must pay special attention to the laya or the tempo of the song. When a bhajan has to be sung slowly – it just has to be slow. Similarly, fast bhajans have the need to be sung fast. The tempo is important and helps in proper synchronization. 5. "Practice 100 times": During one of the interviews granted to the Brindavan bhajan group, Swami said. "Practice 100 times" Does one really need to practice 100 times to get bhajan prefect? Why did swami say this? Let us examine - After the first 25 times you are able to get the lyrics, tune and rhythm perfect. After the next 25 times you get the bhajan into the mind. Now you are able to sing effortlessly. After the next 25 times you get the bhajan into your blood. You know the meaning of each word when you sing. After the next 25 times you get the bhajan into your heart. You are able to have a unique conversation with the lord when you sing. It is therefore mandatory to practice atleast a hundred times … 6. Arrive in time & maintain silence before bhajans: "Where ever my glory is sung, I install myself there", says Swami. Give some time to prepare yourself mentally and physically before the bhajan session. Learn to feel His presence in every bhajan, for He has Himself said so. Devotees who attend bhajans turn their looks from side to side without concentrating on bhajans. If they are not interested in the bhajans, why should they come at all? Once you are inside the bhajan hall, your concentration should be only on the Lord.

7. Sing for the Lord, not for the listeners: Sing to express your devotion not to impress anyone with your musical talent. Pray to the lord before singing for His grace, so that you can sing the song as an offering to the lord rather than with an intention to display your musical talent. "Bhajan must be a felt experience. Do not sing with one eye on the song that makes an effect on the listeners, and the other on the effect it makes on God. Let your heart crave for God – then the raga and tala will automatically be pleasant. Do not allow even one vice like the vice of conceit (personal vanity) to enter and establish itself comfortably in your heart. All the water in the well becomes undrinkable even if one frog is dead and its corpse floats on it. Life has to be lived, through the channel marked out by embankments that slow the raging flood and direct it into useful fields. "Na Shreyo Niyamam Vina " – "No Progress without rules and restrictions." Blessed are those who obey the commandments for they will be rewarded." 8. Sing without any ego: Bhajans done with egoistic pride is as harsh as the crow's caw. So, try to avoid the ego marring your sadhana, even to a small extent. Some people may laugh at these bhajan sessions and may call it mere show and exhibition. They may even recommend quiet meditation in the silent recess of the shrine room. But singing bhajans can really help in removing egoism – For, one is neither afraid of jeering, nor ashamed to call out the name of the lord. On the contrary, one gets inspired by the devotion of others. Use bhajan as an activity to remove ego. 9. Bhajan is not the place to practice silence: When a man has fallen into a well and is unable to get out, he does not mutter to himself. He shouts loudly to get men to save him! What do you do to drive away birds sitting on a branch? You clap your hands loudly. Similarly, sing the names "Govinda, Gopala, Narayana aloud, and clap your hands with vigour so that the birds of evil - Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Madha, Moha infesting your mind will fly away. “When you sing without the thrill of ecstasy, I do not derive any joy”, says Swami. Bhajan must spread good will, love, ecstasy it must cleanse the polluted atmosphere; it must invite all to share in the joy and peace. Be sincere and feel in your hearts what you sing. You need not worry about the raga being appropriate or the tala being accurate. When the Lord is prompting you to sing, can the raga and the tala can never be wrong. He is the pen, He is the thought, He is the word, He is the style, and He is the very composition.

Realize what you have . . .

To realize the value of a sister Ask someone who doesn't have one. To realize the value of ten years Ask a newly divorced couple. To realize the value of four years Ask a graduate. To realize the value of one year Ask a student who has failed a final exam. To realize the value of nine months Ask a mother who gave birth to a stillborn. To realize the value of one month Ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby. To realize the value of one week Ask an editor of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of one hour Ask the lovers who are waiting to meet. To realize the value of one minute Ask a person who has missed the train, bus or plane. To realize the value of one-second Ask a person who has survived an accident... To realize the value of one millisecond Ask the person who has won a silver medal in the Olympics Yesterday is history while tomorrow remains a mystery. Today is the best present you can give yourself. A little boy was spending his Saturday morning playing in his sandbox. He had with him his box of cars and trucks, his plastic pail, and a shiny, red plastic shovel. In the process of creating roads and tunnels in the soft sand, he discovered a large rock in the middle of the sandbox. The boy dug around the rock, managing to dislodge it from the dirt. With a little bit of struggle, he pushed and nudged the rock across the sandbox by using his feet. (He was a very small boy, and the rock was very large.) When the boy got the rock to the edge of the sandbox however, he found that he couldn't roll it up and over the little wall. Determined, the little boy shoved, pushed, and pried, but every time he thought he had made some progress, the rock tipped and then fell back into the sandbox. The little boy grunted, struggled, pushed, & shoved; but his only reward was to have the rock roll back, smashing his chubby fingers. Finally he burst into tears of frustration. All this time the boy's father watched from his living room window as the drama unfolded. At the moment the tears fell, a large shadow fell across the boy and the sandbox. It was the boy's father. Gently but firmly he said, "Son, why didn't you use all the strength that you had available?" Defeated, the boy sobbed back, "But I did, Daddy, I did! I used all the strength that I had!" "No, son," corrected the father kindly. "You didn't use all the strength you had. You didn't ask me." With that the father reached down, picked up the rock and removed it from the sandbox. There is One who is always available to us and willing to give us the strength we need. Isn't it funny how we try so hard to do things ourselves?

5 One day, as usual, an orphan, a little girl, stood at the street corner begging for food, money or whatever she could get. Now, this girl was wearing very tattered clothes, was dirty and quite disheveled. A well-to-do young man passed that corner without giving the girl a second look. But, when he returned to his expensive home, his happy and comfortable family, and his well-laden dinner table, his thoughts returned to the young orphan. He became very angry with God for allowing such conditions to exist. He reproached God, saying, "How can you let this happen? Why don't you do something to help this little girl???" Then he heard God in the depths of his being responding by saying - " I did. I created you."

I asked God to take away my habit. God said, No. It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up. I asked God to make my handicapped child whole. God said, No. His spirit is whole; his body is only temporary. I asked God to grant me patience. God said, No. Patience is a byproduct of tribulations; it isn't granted, it is learned. I asked God to give me happiness. God said, No. I give you blessings; Happiness is up to you. I asked God to spare me pain. God said, No. Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me. I asked God to make my spirit grow. God said, No. You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful. I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life. God said, No. I will give you life, so that you may enjoy all things. I asked God to help me love others, as much as He loves me. God said, “There you are, finally you have the idea!”

SURRENDER

Why are you agitated? Allow Me to take care of all your problems. It is I who has to think of them. I am not expecting anything more than your surrendering to Me. Once you surrender, I take care of all your problems. Then you need not fear anything; you can bid good-bye to all your problems and fears. But your behaviour shows that you do not trust Me. Instead, have full faith in Me. If you surrender, you will be free from all your troubles, worries, sorrows and problems. Then you can pray thus: "Master! I am grateful to you for accepting all my burdens. I know you would only do whatever is good for me." Remember! If again, you start worrying about your problems or feel that your suffering has not come to an end, it only means that you have not surrendered to Me and that you do not believe in My love for you and that you are not willing to entrust your life to my care. Know this clearly. Really, do you want Me to carry your burden? It that is so, you should never again be concerned about your life. Only when you offer yourself fully to Me, I take charge of you and begin to lead you on. Then I will guide and guard you in a unique way, which you would never have imagined and I will carry you with My Own Hands. Whatever worries, problems, expectations are the cause of your suffering; I can take care of all them. I can do anything and in fact I will do everything, once you trust Me fully and pray, "Swamy! All my burdens are yours - be they worldly or other worldly", once you depend upon Me and offer yourself fully and trust Me fully and instead, if you think that I should do as per your wishes, it only means that you do not have faith in Me. It amounts only to your conveying your wishes to Me. For example, it is like a patient going to a doctor and telling the doctor what the solution is for his disease. The doctor knows the solution best and he need not be dictated by the patient. You should not behave with Me like the patient. Always pray, "Swamy! I am grateful to you for any problem that comes my way - for nothing can happen without Thy Will. Pray, grant me the solution to the problems as well. Only you know what is best for me." Sometimes, problems, instead of reducing may be growing. Do not get agitated by them. With full faith in Me, closing your eyes, pray - "Swamy! You know how to solve my problems; show me the way." Then I may solve it, if necessary even in a miraculous way. I will always be with you and help you. But, when would that happen? - When you surrender to Me fully and completely! With Love – Baba

7 The Law of the Seed Take a look at an apple tree. There might be five hundred apples on the tree and each apple has ten seeds. That's a lot of seeds! We might ask, "Why would you need so many seeds to grow just a few more apple trees?" Nature has something to teach us here. Not all seeds grow. In life, most seeds never grow. So if you really want to make something happen, you had better try more than once. This might mean - You'll attend twenty interviews to get one job. You'll interview forty people to find one good employee. You'll talk to fifty people to sell one house or one car. And you might meet a hundred acquaintances just to find one special friend. Successful people fail more often, but they plant more seeds. It is not how much we fail that is important, it is how many times did we try. When things are beyond your control, don’t decide how the world should be. It is not the problem that is the issue, but rather it is your attitude attending to the problem that is the problem. Plant more seeds....that is very important.

If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it. In happy moments, praise God. In difficult moments, seek God. In quiet moments, worship God. In painful moments, trust God.

And every other moment, thank God. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Does God exist at all? A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said, "I don't believe that God exists." "Why do you say that?" asked the customer. "Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn't exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things." The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he did not want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkempt. The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber, "You know what? Barbers do not exist." "How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber. "I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!" "No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside." "Ah, but barbers DO exist! That's what happens when people do not come to me”, said the barber. "Exactly!" affirmed the customer. "That's the point! God, too, does exist! That's what happens when people do not go to Him and don't look upto Him for help. And that's just why there's so much pain and suffering in the world."

Live Life one day at a time . .

.

You shall not worry, for worry is the most unproductive of all human  activities. You shall not be fearful, for most of the things we fear never come to  pass. You shall not cross bridges before you get to them, for no one yet has  succeeded in accomplishing this.  You shall face each problem as it comes. You can handle only one at a  time anyway. You shall not take problems to bed with you..... for they make very  poor pillows. You shall   not  borrow  other   people's   problems.   They can   take  better  care of them than you can. You shall not try to relive yesterday for good or bad ....... it has gone.  Concentrate on what is happening in your life today. You shall be a good listener, for only when you listen do you hear ideas  different from your own. It is very hard to learn something new when  you are talking. You shall not become bogged down by frustration, for 90 percent of it  is rooted in selfpity, and it will only interfere with positive action. You shall count your blessings, never overlooking the small ones, for a  lot of small blessings add up to a big one. You shall remember that worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow.  It only empties today of its strength.  You   shall   never   achieve   real   success   unless   you   like   what   you   are  doing.

9 You shall live every moment to the fullest possible extent. Don’t let a mysterious future and an old past to spoil your current present.

This cheerful girl little girl was five years old. Waiting with her mother at the bus stand, she saw a chain of glistening white pearls in a small box. She asked her mother, “Oh please, Mummy, can I have those pearls?” Her mother bought them for her. Jenny loved her pearls. They made her feel dressed up and grown up. She wore them everywhere – to her play school, to play and even to bed. Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, "Do you love me?" "Oh yes, Daddy. You know that I love you." "Then give me your pearls." "Oh, Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have Princess - the white horse from my collection. The one with the pink tail! Remember, Daddy? The one you gave me. She's my favorite." "That's okay, Honey. Go to sleep. Daddy loves you and Good night." And he brushed her cheek with a kiss. About a week later, after the story time, Jenny's daddy asked again, "Do you love me?" "Daddy, you know I love you." "Then give me your pearls." "Oh Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have my baby doll. The brand new one I got for my birthday. She is so beautiful and you can have the yellow blanket that matches her dress." "That's okay. Sleep well. God bless you, little one. Daddy loves you" And as always, he brushed her cheek with a gentle kiss. A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed. As he came close, he noticed her chin was trembling and one silent tear rolled down her cheek. "What is it, Jenny? What's the matter?" Jenny didn't say anything but lifted her little hand up to her daddy. And when she opened it, there was her little pearl necklace. With a little quiver, she finally said, "Here, Daddy. It's for you." With tears gathering in his own eyes, Jenny's father reached out with one hand to take the cheap fake necklace, and with the other hand he reached into his pocket and pulled out a blue velvet case with a strand of genuine pearls and gave them to Jenny. He had them all the time. He was just waiting for her to give up the fake stuff so he could give her genuine treasure. So it is with our Heavenly Father. He is waiting for us to give up the cheap things in our lives so that he can give us beautiful treasure. Are you holding onto things that God wants you to let go of? Are you holding onto harmful or unnecessary partners, relationships, habits and activities, which you have come so attached to that it seems impossible to let go? Sometimes it is so hard to see what is in the other hand but do believe this one thing...God will never take away something without giving you something better in return.

Before you struggle to get what you don't really want, stop. And consider what an exquisite miracle you already are. Before you spend time complaining that things are not going your way, think for a moment. And see that everything that is, can be put to positive purpose. Before you waste your life worrying that you might lose it all, gently and lovingly calm your thoughts. Realize that what truly has value can never be taken away. Before you blame others for all of your troubles, take a step back. And understand that the way to control your own destiny is to take full responsibility for your life. Before you allow fear to hold you prisoner, remember this. You can learn from the fear, you can

10 use it to more fully prepare, and you can then

move confidently ahead. Before you allow any

person, thought, feeling, event or situation to get you down, take a deep breath and consider. This moment is still unfolding, and you can choose right now to make life better than it has ever been. A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small, desert like island. The two survivors agreed that they had no other recourse but to pray to God. So they started to pray. However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island. The first thing the first man prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, & he was able to eat its fruit. The other man's parcel of land remained barren. After a week, the first man was lonely & he decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked, & the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the land. On the other side of the island, there was nothing. Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes, and more food. The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing. Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that his wife & he could leave the island. In the morning, he found a ship docked at his side of the island. The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the 2nd man on the island. He considered the other man unworthy to receive God's blessings, since none of his prayers had been answered. As the ship was about to leave, the 1st man heard a voice from Heaven booming, "Why are you leaving your companion on the island?" "My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them," the first man answered. "His prayers were all unanswered, and so he does not deserve anything”, he said. "You are mistaken!" the voice rebuked him. "He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, u would not have received any of my blessings." "Tell me," the 1st man asked the voice, "What did he pray for that I should owe him anything?" "He prayed that all your prayers be answered! For all we know, our blessings are not the fruits of our prayers alone, but those of others who pray for us.

When the idea is not right, God says, "NO" When the time is not right, God says, "SLOW" When you are not right, God says, "GROW” When everything is all right, God says, "GO" Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire. If you did, what would there be to look forward to? Be thankful when you don't know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn. Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you're tired and weary, because it means you've made a difference.

It's easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they can become your blessings.

DON’T MAKE A PROMISE WHEN YOU ARE IN JOY DON’T REPLY WHEN YOU ARE SAD. DON’T TAKE A DECISION WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY. THINK TWICE, ACT WISE.

As an old man walked the beach at dawn he noticed a young man ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Finally catching up with the youth, he asked him why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun. " But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish" countered the other. How can your effort make any difference? The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it to safety in the waves. "It makes a difference to this one,” he said.

Having grasped what ought to be grasped, Hold on with a tight grasp till the end. Having desired what ought to be desired, Hold on till the desire is fulfilled. Having asked what ought to be asked, Hold on till you receive that you have asked for. Having thought what ought to be thought, Hold on till the thought comes true. Either GOD has to bless you out of frustration with your prayers, Or you have to ask with all your heart intensely. Don't just give up till He answers you..... From world over, he received letters from his fans, one of which conveyed: "Why does God have to select you for such a bad disease"? To this Arthur Ashe replied: “The world over -- 5 crore children Start playing tennis, 50 lakh learn to play tennis, 5 lakh learn professional tennis, 50,000 come to the circuit,

When I was holding a cup I never asked God "Why me?" And today in pain I should not be asking God "Why me?"

15 Laws of Life -

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

1. Love Is The Law Of Life: All love is expansion, all selfishness is contraction. Love is therefore the only law of life. He who loves lives, he who is selfish is dying. Therefore, love for love's sake, because it is law of life, just as you breathe to live. 2. It's Your Outlook That Matters: It is our own mental attitude, which makes the world what it is for us. Our thoughts make things beautiful, our thoughts make things ugly. The whole world is in our own minds. Learn to see things in the proper light. 3. Life is Beautiful: First, believe in this world - that there is meaning behind everything. Everything in the world is good, is holy and beautiful. If you see something evil, think that you do not understand it in the right light. Throw the burden on yourselves! 4. It's The Way You Feel: Feel like Christ and you will be a Christ; feel like Buddha and you will be a Buddha. It is feeling that is the life, the strength, the vitality, without which no amount of intellectual activity can reach God. 5. Set Yourself Free: The moment I have realized God sitting in the temple of every human body, the moment I stand in reverence before every human being and see God in him - that moment I am free from bondage, everything that binds vanishes, and I am free. 6. Don't Play The Blame Game: Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way. 7. Help Others: If money helps a man to do good to others, it is of some value; but if not, it is simply a mass of evil, and the sooner it is got rid of, the better. 8. Uphold Your Ideals: Our duty is to encourage every one in his struggle to live up to his own highest idea, and strive at the same time to make the ideal as near as possible to the Truth. 9. Listen To Your Soul: You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul. 10. Be Yourself: The greatest religion is to be true to your own nature. Have faith in yourselves! 11. Nothing Is Impossible: Never think there is anything impossible for the soul. It is the greatest heresy to think so. If there is sin, this is the only sin - to say that you are weak, or others are weak. 12. You Have The Power: All the powers in the universe are already ours. It is we who have put our hands before our eyes and cry that it is dark. 13. Learn Everyday: The goal of mankind is knowledge... now this knowledge is inherent in man. No knowledge comes from outside: it is all inside. What we say a man 'knows', should, in

13

strict psychological language, be what he 'discovers' or 'unveils'; what man 'learns' is really what he discovers by taking the cover off his own soul, which is a mine of infinite knowledge. 14. Be Truthful: Everything can be sacrificed for truth, but truth cannot be sacrificed for anything. 15. Think Different: All differences in this world are of degree, and not of kind, because oneness is the secret of everything.
