Bobcat Teams Leap into New Year Tory Gillis | Sports Writer The New Year has begun successfully for our Bobcat Athletic teams. With teams recently battling the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, our women’s volleyball team and men’s basketball each came up with wins, while their counterparts saw nail-bitingly close scoreboards. In volleyball action, the Lady ‘Cats are starting 2009 off with a bang. Having continued their winning streak in the Canada West Conference in CIS play to 5 matches. This success has improved their record to 9-3, and also placed them closer to the number one spot in their conference, as they have shot up the CIS top ten rankings to the third spot, just behind Alberta (2) and Montreal (1). With their recent return from Florida after a hot showing at the Innisbrook Resort Invitational in Clearwater, FL, they
are back to business and looking ambitious with their dual wins in straight sets in a home-and-home series with the Wesmen. They and the Men’s Volleyball team take their next shot on the road this weekend in Kamloops versus Thompson Rivers University. On the men’s side of things, their Jan 10th game vs. U of W was close but not quite, losing 3-1, with extremely close scores in each set (20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23). Despite the loss, their ranking has also improved 1 spot to #7 in the CIS, with a current record of 6-4. It’s a long road to catch U of A’s hot 12-0 streak, but other rivals such as the Wesmen and Trinity Western are definitely in reach for the Bobcats. Their second half-success is going to be key for the ‘Cats.

Art and History at The Curve Cara Edge | Arts Editor Brandon University has increased its presence in the Fine Arts scene over the last number of years, not only in the growth of the faculty but also in the on-campus galleries. While most people think of the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art when they think of venues to view the latest exhibits, the university has taken advantage of the ample wall space through out the university, including the latest upgrades to the Tommy McLeod Curve Gallery.
Located in what may not be viewed as the most traditional space, the Curve Gallery is on the second floor of the library, by the study carrels. On the average day, students are more likely to be examining a picture on the page rather than a picture on the wall, but those with a keen eye to art, or in some cases, history, take a few moments to clear their minds of their studies at hand and appreciate the subject matter on the wall.
The wall space is not new. The library expansion in 1993 created the curved wall that periodically displayed art under the name “The Curve Gallery”. During Homecoming Weekend 2008, this past October, the newly lit gallery was renamed after an alumni, and longtime supporter of the former Brandon College and the current Brandon University.
