To Dr. Manmohan Singh Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Government of India New Delhi 10th June 2009

Sub: Submission of the Petition to secure the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and support of the restoration of democracy in Burma

Respected Hon’ble Prime Minister, We, the Indian Parliamentarian Forum for Democracy in Burma (IPFDB) submit this on behalf of the Parliamentarians who endorsed and supported the Statement (enclosed herein) for immediate release of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the recipient of the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and for the restoration of democracy in Burma. We understand that the military regime in Burma currently headed by Gen. Than Shwe continues to pose a threat to the lives and liberties of hundreds and thousands of innocent people in Burma. People in Burma believe that there will be no inclusive political process and free and fair elections in 2010 if she and more than 2100 political prisoners are still detained. We strongly call on the Indian government to intervene in the current situation to urge upon the Burmese generals through all possible diplomatic and other demarches to release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and impress upon the regime in respecting democratic principles. Therefore, in this regard the Statement assumes significance. We thank you for accepting this Statement.

Sincerely, Sd/Indian Parliamentarians Forum for Democracy in Burma (IPFDB) Sharad Joshi (MP), Rajya Sabha Co-Convenor, IPFDB Tel : 9811477736/9868181092

Indian Parliamentarians’ Forum for Democracy in Burma (IPFDB) Indian MPs Call for Immediate and Unconditional Release of Burmese Democratic Leader Aung San Suu Kyi 10 June 2009

We, Parliamentarians in India strongly call on the military regime of Burma to release Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the recipient of the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, Aung San Suu Kyi immediately and unconditionally. We recognize her as genuine democratic leader of Burma who won landslide victory in 1990 general elections by more than 80 % votes. She and her party NLD has never been allowed to rule the country. The military junta crushed the people’s mandate and put her under house arrest for 13 years of the past 19 years. We are shocked to learn that since 14 May 2009, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved to the notorious Insein Prison from her house to face trial on trumped- up charges by the military authority. People in Burma believe that there will be no inclusive political process and free and fair elections in 2010 if she and more than 2100 political prisoners are still detained. We also urge the new Government of India to review its soft approach to the military regime and its silence to the suffering of the Burmese people that have made the regime tougher in its repressiveness. We strongly call on the Indian government to intervene in the current situation to urge upon the Burmese generals through all possible diplomatic and other demarches to release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and to impress upon the Burmese regime in respecting democratic principles. As a largest democracy and good neighbour, we have moral obligation to rescue her and the country from the devastation. Signed by: Sharad Joshi (MP), Rajya Sabha Sabha Co-Convenor, IPFDB
