a brief history of education in thailand the sukhothai period (a.d.1238-1378) thai alphabet in 1283 by king ramkamhaeng stone inscriptions record aspects of education the ayutthaya period (a.d. 1350-1767) education for princes, boys of noble birth, and commoners. during the reign of king narai – first book for study of thai language entitled chindamani. used up to h.m.king chulalongkorn's reign. thonburi period (1767-1782) after the fall of ayutthaya in 1767, king thaksin re-united the thai kingdom and established thonburi as his new capital. he is honored for rallying the thai people to rebuild their nation revived culture, literature, arts. 1782: political conflict, general chakri became king rama i and founded bangkok. king rama 1 developed public education by reforming the buddhist church. by the mid 1800’s, the threat of western imperialism had become a major issue. treaties concluded with foreign powers, mostly treaties of friendship and commerce. english became the lingua franca of the far east. king chulalongkorn (rama v) 1871: opened a school in the palace to educate young princes and the sons of nobles. the first “modern” thai school as it had its own school building, lay teachers and a time-table. set up english school in the palace to prepare princes and court children for further studies abroad set up a number of schools outside the palace for the education of commoners’ children. 1897:

queen sribajarindra established the saowabha school for girls.

1901:

first government school for girls, bamrung wijasatri in bangkok.

1913:

first women teacher training school at benchama rajalai school for girls.

1898:

first education plan. educational organization covered all levels - pre-primary, primary, secondary and technical education up to

important laws and regulations for foreign teachers the national education act (1999) teachers and educational personnel council act (2003) teachers' council committee announcement of criteria, assessment and evaluation of foreign teachers' application for teacher license 2006 section 43 of the teachers and educational personnel council act states that: “teaching, educational institution administration, and educational administration shall be a licensed profession under this act …. “ no one shall practice these professions without a license, except in some exceptional cases …. (1) – (8). these acts require the teachers’ council of thailand to: set professional standards issue and revoke professional licenses oversee and monitor compliance with professional standards this law governs teachers educational institutional administrators education administrators others as specified in regulations. therefore: teachers need to apply for a license. teachers need to conduct themselves according to professional standards and ethics. licenses can be suspended or revoked. a warning can be given. thai law requires that all foreigners obtain a teaching license before teaching in schools in thailand. “schools in thailand” means:

kindergartens, primary schools, and high schools teachers in universities and private institutes (e.g. language schools) are covered under different regulations. both government and privately-operated schools schools following a thai curriculum or the curriculum of another country (international schools). there are three documents that are often referred to as “teacher’s license”: teaching permit (sor chor 11) teaching appointment (sor chor 18 or 19) teacher’s license (from the teachers’ council of thailand) in order to be granted a license, you must: 1. possess appropriate qualifications (education and experience). 2. show: - basic proficiency in thai language - knowledge of aspects of thai culture relevant to foreign teachers, - knowledge of professional standards and professional ethics for teachers in thailand qualifications for teacher’s license 1. recognized teacher credentials from a foreign country + at least one year’s teaching experience + orientation training certificate 2. a bachelor’s degree in education + at least one year’s teaching experience + orientation training certificate 3. a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education + completion of a diploma course in education / teaching + at least one year’s teaching experience + orientation training certificate q.

what if i don’t have teacher credentials nor a ba degree in education?

a.

you can either:

do a certificate course in teaching at a local university. do a knowledge equivalency exam through the teachers’ council. documents required for teacher’s license from teachers’ council of thailand

a photocopy of passport certifying legal immigration. a photocopy of educational qualifications. a photocopy of teacher credentials from a foreign country. a photocopy of a letter of certifying teaching experience. a photocopy of certificate for satisfying assessment and evaluation criteria. two, one-inch, full-faced photographs, taken no more than six months ago. a photocopy of receipt for 500 baht as payment of teacher license fee. a photocopy of a teacher appointment letter or an employment contract with the specification of the date of the appointment. a photocopy of work permit or documents certifying residence in thailand. a photocopy of teacher permit certificate (sor chor 11) a photocopy of teacher appointment certificate (sor chor 19 or sor chor 18)

standards of knowledge and experience knowledge refers to those things that a teacher should know or be able to do in order to carry out their teaching duties in a professional manner standards of knowledge and experience teachers should have some knowledge about: 1. language & technology 2. curriculum development 3. learning management 4. educational psychology 5. educational measurement 6. classroom management 7. educational research 8. educational technology 9. teachership 1. language and technology can use language (thai, english, or other language) effectively for communication can use common computing programs 2. curriculum development able to analyze curriculum able to improve and develop diverse curricula able to evaluate curricula both before and after implementation able to create a curricula

3. learning management able to compile courses and formulate learning plans for a term able to design a learning model appropriate to learners’ age able to select and develop appropriate media able to organize activities that promote learning and classify learners’ levels 4. psychology for teachers understand the nature of learners assist learners to learn and develop based on their potential provide learners with guidelines and assistance in improving their quality of life able to promote learners’ aptitude and interest 5. educational measurement & evaluation able to perform authentic assessment and measurement able to use evaluation results to improve teaching and curriculum 6. classroom management possess leadership able to manage classroom able to communicate effectively able to ensure value congruence able to be innovative in classroom management

expereince: some skills are learnt or developed “by doing”. through teaching experience teachers will develop skill in: teaching – from lesson preparation through classroom activities to evaluation and improvement preparing learning plans identifying different types of learners preparing academic projects teaching of specific subjects
