Structures and Properties of Matter Experimental Question: How does the amount of a substance affect the rate at which temperature changes? Hypnosis: Water with less volume will heat up faster. Materials:
Cooking pan Room temperature water Graduated cylinder Meat thermometer Oven mittens Safety goggles Heat source (stove burner) Stop watch Paper Pencilfc
Safety procedures: Learning coach supervision Used safety goggles, apron and closed tie shoes. Do not wear long sleeves Do not reach over a hot burner. Do not leave the experiment unattended Clean up spills immediately Inform your learning coach of any injuries 1. 2. 3. 4.
Measure water in the graduated cylinder to 200mL Pour 200mL water into the cooking pan Turn the heat source on Measure the temperature with the meat thermometer at every 1 minute interval while on the heat source for ten minutes 5. Log the data on piece of paper. 6. Repeat process but with 400mL water and COOL DOWN PAN. Data table:
Analysis:
Conclusion: The hypothesis was correct because the more the water there is the more volume there is which takes longer to heat up. If the starting temperature was different it could change the outcome. The amount of water affects the rate at which temperature changes because the volume is greater which requires more time to heat up.
