Stockholm Marathon is committed to doing as much as possible to minimise the impact of the marathon and associated events on the environment. We are taking on the concept of sustainability in organising the event. Already embedded into the culture of the race, of course, is foot power – the greenest transport method possible. Participants’ travel and transport of equipment have the largest emissions impact of any live event. The Stockholm Marathon´s transport impact is reduced through various initiatives. We work closely with SJ, Swedish Railways and SL, Stockholm Local Transport Authority and we encourage competitors to use public transport to the start of the race. We also work closely with waste collection company, Ragn-Sells and use their full programme of recyling and waste management. At all water stations we use compostable cups from Stellata AB which are collected in compostable bin bags and then transported to RagnSells’ composting plant. The plastic PET bottles distributed after the finish to runners are all collected and recycled. All plates, knives, forks, cups used at the pasta party on the day before the race are compostable. Each year we work to add more and more products which are recycleable to make Stockholm Marathon a greener event.
