Larene A. Bowen STEP Standard 7 – Reflecting on Instruction to Improve Student Progress Improved Practice Based on the Unit of Study
Short-Term Goal 1. I think my lessons could include more of the Cheyenne cultural elements in the lessons this may help the Cheyenne students to relate better to the lessons.
Plan to Reach the Goal (i.e., professional development, research on the Internet, observation of a veteran teacher, etc.) In order to include more elements from their culture, I could start by taking Cheyenne Studies summer courses from the Chief Dull Knife College. I could also take language courses from the college to help me to connect with the students and build a stronger connection with their culture. I could also speak with parents and other community members. I could also attend powwows and other cultural events. I could also speak with Mrs. King she works at the school and knows a lot about the Cheyenne culture.
2. I also think I could improve my lessons further by finding small educational activities to fill the students dead time. This could help students keep focused.
I could start by talking with the other teachers at the school and see what they do to keep the students busy. I could also go to the up coming math professional development meeting in Helena or the MBI development Conference over the summer. They often have courses with great ideas to help teachers improve their lessons. I could also look for manipulatives for the students.
3. I could also improve my lessons by building better relationships with the students.
I could start to build better relationships by spending one on one time with the students during lunch time or after school. I could also allow the students show and tell time in class. This could help the students to be confident in being themselves and learning about others that share their hobbies.
