STCW Maritime Safety for Merchant and Passenger Ships - IMO STCW Courses Maritime Safety Courses & Marine Accident nvestigation Courses for Seafarers on Ro-Ro, Passenger and Merchant Ships For a large industry where 90% of world’s goods are transported, maritime industry plays a crucial role in world commerce and therefore, maritime safety is a major factor. There are several regulations and guidance in place by IMO and national administrations for safety factor in the industry. Apart from Basic Safety Training, there are a number of courses and programs in place under STCW Convention for seagoing and designated ashore personnel. The IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) deals with all matters related to maritime safety and maritime security which fall within the scope of IMO, covering both passenger ships and different types of cargo ships. One of the main factors concerning shipboard safety is the human element or human factor. STCW Maritime Safety Courses Personal Survival Techniques (PST) (1 day course): This course should be taken by every prospective seafarer. It covers training in personal survival techniques and is based on the provisions of table A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code. The aim of the course is to provide seafarers with the basic essential knowledge, understanding and proficiency to protect and maintain their own and others safety at sea in accordance with international regulations. Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSST) (5 day course): This course provides mandatory minimum training in personal safety and social responsibility and is based on the provisions of table A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code. The course will provide an insight into the various elements of a ship and Operating Procedures onboard so that adjustment can be made to the shipboard environment, and are better prepared to cope with any unforeseen circumstances. Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other Than Fast Rescue Boats) (PSCRB) (5 day course): This course covers training in the mandatory minimum requirements for the issue of certificates of proficiency in survival craft as specified in table A-VI/21 of the STCW Code. This course prepares crew for the launching and

handling of survival craft through a series of practical exercises using a range of open and enclosed lifeboats and inflatable rescue boats to build confidence, competence and knowledge of safety procedures. Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (FRB) (2-3 day course): This course provides training in fast rescue boats and is based on the provisions of table A-VI/2-2 of the STCW Code. This course provides seafarers with the skills and knowledge to perform their role as a coxswain of a Fast Rescue Boat in case of emergency situations at sea. Under the new STCW 2010 requirements: See below Validity (All Certificates): 5 years Refresher (All Certificates): Every 5 years Safety Courses for Passenger & Ro-Ro Ships Crowd Management, Passenger Safety and Safety Training for Personnel Providing Direct Services to Passengers in Passenger Spaces: This course covers the mandatory minimum training requirements for personnel on passenger and Ro-Ro ships and is based on the provisions of section A-V/2 of the STCW Code. Proficiency in Crisis Management and Human Behavior Training Including Passenger Safety, Cargo Safety and Hull Integrity Training: This course covers the mandatory training requirements for masters, chief mates, chief engineer officers, second engineer officers and every person assigned immediate responsibility for embarking and disembarking passengers, loading, discharging or securing cargo or closing hull openings on board passenger and Ro-Ro ships. It is based on the provisions of section A-V/2 and regulation V/2 of the STCW Code. Safety Investigation Courses Safety Investigation into Marine Casualties and Marine Incidents: The course is essentially balanced between theory (lecture material) and practical group exercises and case studies. a series of exercises structured around the requirements of the international legislation, IMO conventions and instruments, and the required common and homogeneous approach, application of consistent methodology and no blame culture to adopt in the conduct of marine safety investigations into marine casualties and marine incidents; as well as to provide reports to the Organization. The group exercises and case studies are controlled by an instructor and, initially, allow the trainees to become familiar with applicable international legislation and IMO instruments on this matter as well as guidelines and procedures to be used. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS UNDER STCW 2010 For Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (PSSR) following subjects will be added: Communications, Control of Fatigue, and Teamwork Refresher Training may take the form of e-learning, shipboard drills and training or shore based training Following courses require refresher training every five years: Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSST), Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other Than Fast Rescue Boats), and Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats
