Personal Statement Sameer Shetabi 13DIA My enduring enthusiasm for the workings of television has driven my desire to study a practical Media course, anchored in solid theory. This interest is heightened by my work in Media Studies, where simple textual deconstruction of moving imagery has shown me television’s power as a visual medium. My choice of A-Levels – Politics, History and English – has helped develop my understanding of the significance of the media in wider society. These factors have stirred my ambition to work in TV and ultimately produce my own programmes. I have extended my knowledge further by reading Broadcast magazine and MediaGuardian weekly, in addition to visiting Guardian Unlimited. I confirmed my interest in television whilst gaining real-world experience within the industry. As a Runner at Sunset & Vine’s Tour de France 2006 coverage, I was immersed in the swift environment of live sports television. I worked with a range of departments including graphics, editing and ITV presentation in the Gallery. In addition to administrative tasks, such as selecting viewer e-mails and compiling the day’s running order, I learnt first hand how live programmes are prepared and broadcast. In 2006 and 2007, I worked at Glasshead – a production company specialising in educational programming – which allowed me to work both independently and in teams. As both a Researcher and Runner, I worked on administrative, research and development tasks. I was also entrusted with the development of two of my own programme proposals and a New Media concept for Channel 4 and Five. Moreover, I took the demanding position of Conference Co-ordinator at a 3-day BBC jam conference where I arranged, prepared and filmed discussions throughout the event. Overall, my experience at Glasshead proved I can meet the industry’s vast challenges. As Chairman and Editor of my year-group’s 100-page Yearbook in 2006, I led a 20-student team, requiring me to be efficient and adhere to strict deadlines. This year I founded the school’s Media Society, which holds discussions exploring industry issues and hosts weekly film nights. My favourite element is Media Club where I work closely with groups of Year 7 and 8 pupils, teaching them to plan, film and edit their own videos. Earlier this year, I also produced, edited and part-filmed a 30-minute documentary about a drama initiative for the school and local council, where I learnt a great deal about documentary style through the extensive editing process. Being Head Boy at The Latymer School has presented me with many opportunities and responsibilities. I have improved my public speaking skills with speeches at formal events before students, parents and dignitaries. I am also the ‘Wyatt’ House Captain, involving me in organisation and implementation of many activities with a team of officers. This sees me present regular assemblies, train our Debating team and arrange our charity Variety evening for the elderly in our community, in addition to directing our Drama production for the interhouse championship. My supplementary experience has compounded my enthusiasm for the media and TV production, both in and out of school, by developing my skills and understanding of real world practices. A TV Production course would allow my creativity to flourish, acting as a crucial stepping stone to a successful career in the industry. My passion, dedication and fascination with the workings of the media suit a degree and career in television. 550 words | 3,471 characters with spaces
