A Word from the President Greetings all alumni, family, and friends! As its 147th season comes to a close, the Penn Glee Club is still actively performing and rehearsing. We just wrapped up our annual Spring Show in the Zellerbach Theater, Back To The Future! The Musical. As our 147th Spring Production, the Glee Club stepped it up and worked with gifted director Eduardo “Chiquita” Placer (C ’99) to create and craft a truly unique Glee Club show. Thank you to all who came out to support us! In addition to the Spring Show, we recently hit the road, putting on successful performances in Bucks County, PA and Washington, DC. The Glee Club road trip tradition continues to be an exciting addition to the semester! More recently, we performed at the Church of the Holy Trinity as a part of their College Choir series. The concert was free and open to the public and we were pleased to see so many of our local alumni come out and support us. We are also preparing for our annual Spring Tour! This year, the Glee Club will be heading to Central and South America, making stops in Bogotá, Colombia; Panamá City, Panamá; and San José, Costa Rica. Aside from our usual grueling schedule of performances and public appearances, we hope to catch a few rays on the beaches of Quepos, Costa Rica! Remember to look for updates from our GCGC President, Rob Biron (C ‘91) on Alumni Weekend activities. Thank you all for your continued support of the Penn Glee Club. Please remember to check our website for updates on performances and events. If you have any questions, please contact me at gleeclub@dolphin. upenn.edu. Hopefully I will see you at one of our events in the near future! Sincerely, Mark Huerta President, Penn Glee Club

Since we last left the Glee Club....

The Glee Club has had a very busy spring. As soon as classes started, the Club made its annual pilgrimage to New York City to perform at Hunter College. The performance went off without a hitch, despite half of the Club's members being delayed on a bus caught in rush hour traffic for four hours. After the performance at Hunter College, the Club geared up for its 147th annual production, Back to the Future! The Musical. The script of the show, written by alumnus Mark Glassman (C’00), featured an original time-travel-themed plot with many clever references to the 1980s trilogy. In addition, the show featured the masterful stage direction and choreography of alumnus Eduardo Placer (C’99), another spectacular tap-dance finale choreographed by Robert Biron (C’91), and of course the careful and nuanced musical stewardship of the Club’s director, C. Erik Nordgren. Once the spring show ended, the Club was not at all finished. As Penn Provost Ronald Daniels was ready to leave his post, the Club surprised him in his office with a final farewell and a toast for all of his work at the university. Then the Club hit the road to Council Rock South High School to perform for local Penn alumni of Bucks County and New Jersey. When the Club returned to campus, it helped to kick off Relay for Life at Franklin Field with the national anthem and The Red and Blue. Finally, the Club took another road trip to Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Maryland to perform for Penn alumni of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. All of these performances were met with the highest level of appreciation from audiences of undergrads and alumni alike.

The Glee Club concludes a successful spring show with the traditional tap-dance finale.

Performing “Cool” from West Side Story. Complete with choreography in the style of Jerome Robbins.

Glee Club Singing Valentines For the past decade, the Glee Club has played the role of a musical Cupid on Valentine’s Day by delivering Singing Valentines in person to individuals on campus, or over the phone to friends and family around the world. This past February, the Glee Club, for the first time, made it possible for individuals to sign up for Valentines through an online system and also partnered with the Penn chapter of Habitat for Humanity by agreeing to donate all of the proceeds from the event. These factors, coupled with an increased publicity push, led to more than 200 requests during the three days leading up to Valentine’s Day and broke all previous records! Thanks to all of the alumni who ordered a Singing Valentine.

Calling All Glee Club Alumni! The Penn Glee Club is attempting to gather current alumni notes as well as any digital media (images, video, etc.) that you may have from your days as a member of the Club. All information that we receive will be organized and displayed in a password-protected portion of our website. We hope that this site can become a novel and easy way for Alumni to keep connected with each other as well as an extensive online history of the Club. Please send all information to [email protected].
