The Qualities Of A Spiritual Leader Read 1 Samuel 8: 1 – 10:27 Karen Makishima
“Give us a king to rule over us so we can be the same as the other nations,” the Israelites demanded! Samuel was grieved because they were seeking a human king instead of seeking the God that redeemed them from the Egyptians. After God agreed to let the Israelites have a king, Saul entered the story. He had no kingly qualities except for his physical stature. God had to convince Saul that he was the one for the job. God changed Saul’s heart to prepare him to be the king. “Then the spirit of the Lord will rush upon you with power. You will prophesy with these prophets, and you will be changed into a different man “(10:6). After Samuel presented the new King Saul to the people, he explained the rights and duties of a King, wrote them in a book and put them before the Lord (10:25). These Mosaic regulations for kingship are found in Deuteronomy 17:14-20. • Appoint the king your God chooses • He must not be drawn by the things of this world or his heart will be hardened • He will respect the Lord his God and obey His teachings and commands • He should not think himself better than his fellow Israelites Henry & Richard Blackaby, in Spiritual Leadership, help Christians understand God’s design for spiritual leadership. They define this as being able to move people on to God’s agenda; in other words, moving people from where they are, to where God wants them to be. This means depending on the Holy Spirit, being accountable to God and influencing both Christians and non-Christians alike. The goal is to bring glory to God by teaching others to lead; by delegating, giving others freedom to fail, and encouraging and supporting those they are leading. With God’s help, a leader can avoid the pitfalls of succumbing to the temptations of the world.
P r ay e r Our Father in Heaven, may Your kingdom come and Your will be done here on earth as it is in Heaven. Use us, Lord, to bring glory to You. Forgive us when we seek the things of this world to replace You. In Jesus’ Name – Amen.
