A short insight into the Bengalee way of life as seen by a “Hindustani”/”Punjabi/almostBengalee person (tongue-in-cheek!)

As the wife (the “Mrs”/family) of a Bengalee gentleman/bhadralok, I have an interesting perspective of being a Bengalee yet not being one (or in Hindi “dhobi ka kutta- na ghar ka na ghat ka”)

When I got married, we lived in Calcutta (as it was then called), and like everyone (read – All Bengalees) predicted, I came to love it – it grew on me! Amazingly it “grew ” on me faster than on my husband (who is a “probashi”- on aside, I used to consider the Bengali language, a distorted, poorly pronounced version of Hindi – till I realised that in Bengali you have a word to express so much more – like Probashi, Ghoti and, my personal favourite “gondogol”!). And Calcutta is NOT a dying city. To quote Vir Sanghvi: “That’s why Calcutta is not for everyone. You want your cities clean and green; stick to Delhi. You want your cities, rich and impersonal; go to Bombay. You want them high-tech and full of draught beer; Bangalore's your place. But if you want a city with a soul: come to Calcutta.” Although I must admit that what I really liked about Calcutta was our way of life. The endless Adda sessions, the endless eating (rolls and jhal muuri – even in office!), the endless quizzing (mostly trivia) and the club-hopping (we still retain our Tollygunge club membership in the hope of returning some day), the football craze (and we do not discriminate in Calcutta – you probably find more Brazil supporters here than in Brazil), the cricket craze (we even got an off day from work to watch the finals once). How we got any work done is amazing – but then who wants to work – we led a “cultured” and “intellectual” life – one where we first had tea , then chatted before getting down to

business, if at all(sooo unlike the Finnish way of working, I suppose). All of this reminds me of my daughter saying that she likes the International School because there is no pressure and no homework – something like Calcutta for me!

I did not speak any Bengali (like so many Bengalis don’t speak any Hindi – although they may think they do!) for some time. Then, to get my self understood by the maid etc, I started speaking very poor Hindi, and when that didn’t work, I finally started speaking very poor Bengali. But what I did learn is Bengali food!! And whoever said “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” was definitely speaking about the Bengali man. Nowhere have I seen such involvement in food, the French probably come a very distant second, if at all (only in Bengali can you discuss the breakfast menu before you get out of bed, the lunch menu at breakfast, and the dinner menu at lunch. Now when I call up my mother-in-law on a Sunday, I have become so “Bengalised” that the first thing I ask is what she had for lunch! And of course, during the Puja preparation meetings, the high point – and the most controversial- is the menu discussion).

This piece comes at a time when Durga Puja is near – an occasion, a festival, an event, that I have come to enjoy and look forward to, especially living in Helsinki. The importance of Durga puja and the fervour with which it is celebrated never ceases to amaze me. You could be in Bangalore, or Bulgaria, Houston or Helsinki and you can find a Durga Puja celebration. All this is particular surprising when you consider the fact that Bengal has always had a Communist Party in power (and all you intellectual Bengalis – don’t correct me if I am wrong). But Puja time (as I have seen in Calcutta ) can be quite non-discriminatory – I have seen images of Sourav Ganguly, Saddam Hussein, a Dinosaur – next will be Sarah Palin and if we Finbens have our way then maybe a Reindeer and Santa Claus – or perhaps just a Nokia phone! Our Puja here in Helsinki is especially dear to me. And since you can’t beat them, join them and all that – so I will be there, monkey cap and all – and whilst I still can’t sing Rabindra shongeet , or understand some of the movies– I do enjoy it all. And the prayers are no less sincere . The sorrow at the end of the Puja is no less.

And maybe I should take as a compliment when one of our fellow Bengalis here said to me , “Boudi, you are like a Bengali only! For as Gokhale said (and all Bengalis know ): “What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow”! (I am presuming Finland and the others think the day after tomorrow, if at all).

Liviing in Finland Ishita Chatterjee (age 11 years) I have lived in Finland for over two years now. I still don’t know know my neighbours any better now but I do understand a lot more about the people and life here. Before we moved here the only thing I knew about Finland was Nokia, Santa Claus and the fact that it was a long long way from Honk Kong, where we were living!

We came here in the middle of winter – I loved the snow and the quiet and the calm – till I found that it was so quiet that I couldn’t sleep at night. Suddenly I missed the noise and hustle bustle of Hong Kong. Mum loved the fact that it was so safe here – but mostly I think what she liked was the fact that she didn’t have to drop me to school every morning as I could take the public bus. I found going to school when it was still quite dark and returning home when it was getting dark again quite an adventure. Plus I had a cell phone !

We live in a house in Espoo which is a big change for us after having lived in apartments in India, Singapore and Hong Kong. I really miss having friends and people living all around us though. And you can’t knock on your neighbour’s door here when you run out of eggs. The people are so quiet and soft spoken that mum is forever telling us to talk softly. Even the dogs are quiet here. She has stopped asking us to wish and smile at people living in our neighbourhood though.

On one of the few times our neighbour called us up was to tell dad that he had left the car window rolled down and it was expected to rain in an hours time! That’s another thing – everyone knows the weather-In fact once I got a journal here which had place at the top for recording the date and time – and the weather! No jokes. Now I check the weather almost everyday myself. Almost like the locals!

Another thing I like and our family follows is the concept of the “summer cottage”. A house for the summer – a place to get close to nature for a break. We live close to sea and there is a forest a few metres from our house – I can’t imagine getting any closer to nature than that. Till dad found us a summer cottage without electricity and plumbing – fortunately mum put her foot down - and we found a cottage with a dishwasher and washing machine instead. I have found that going away for the summer is a must because everything closes during that time – even the swimming pool in Tapiola!!

The only time you can see huge crowds in Helsinki atleast, is during Vappu, when everyone behaves in a very unFinnish manner – we went to join in the fun at Kaivopuisto where we were told everyone takes a picnic lunch, so we packed sandwiches and drank coke from cans – only to find some locals out in formal suits – some in pink hair as well – eating their picnic lunches on folding tables with tablecloths and fancy glasses!! The other time we saw a huge crowd in Helsinki was during the Lordi concert just after they had won the Eurovision for Finland. I must say I also really like Lordi but here they like Lordi so much they even have Lordi salmiakki and Lordi Coke! Hallelujah!

We have become quite Finnish in some ways – now we know that Sundays are truly rest days – not days to go shopping as most of the stores are closed anyway, our front door step resembles a shoe-shop, we use the sauna quite often but at a comfortable temperature of 50 to 60 degrees, Aditya, my brother, still wears a Schumacher Ferrari jacket but now he talks about ice-hockey and Moomin, we eat a lot of Karelian and Ruis bread. But I still don’t like Salmiaki – and can’t understand the idea of a salmiaki icecream!

FISH AMRITSARI (“Hindustani Ishtyle”)

Ingredients: Fish (boneless – salmon also OK) - 250 gms Lemon juice – 1 tsp Ginger paste – 1 inch piece Garlic past – 6 cloves Ajwain (carom seeds-ground) – 1/4th tsp Besan (gram flour) - 1 tbsp Oil – 1 tbsp plus for deep frying Salt – to taste Red chilli powder – to taste Red colour – optional Method:

Cut the fish into approximately 1 inch square pieces. Apply lime juice on the fish. Mix all the ingredients (except oil for frying) and rub this onto the fish. Leave marinated for 4 to 6 hours Heat oil in a deep pan. Then fry fish well. Serve hot with Chaat masala.

Ingredients: Milk (full cream – red one in Finland) – 1 liter Cream (Flora Viispi in Finland) – 1 pack or 250 ml Sugar – 12 tbsp Curd (or Bulgarian Jogurtti in Finland) – 200 gms (beaten) Method:

Put all above ingredients (except the curd) in a thick bottomed dish (Pateela) and keep on medium heat till reduced to half. The colour will turn reddish. When this mix is warm (not too hot or will split), mix in the beaten curd, and set in an earthenware (preferably) or other dish. Setting will take 6 hours or so (overnight is best). Set in a warm place (or in oven – temperature setting of only 50 degrees centigrade). Chill and serve.

Durga Puja Dhriti Deb (age 9 years) Vijaya Dashami also known as Dastard, Dashahara, Navaratri, Durgotdsav… is one of the very important & fascinating festivals of India, which is celebrated in the lunar month of Ashwin which is usually in September or October. This festival is celebrated in India, Java, Sumatra, Japan etc... Dasara is Nepal’s national festival. In Sanskrit, 'Vijaya' means Victory and 'Dashami' means victory of the 10th day. Dasara is also known as Navaratri. The 10th day is in honor of Durga Devi. The basic purpose behind this festival is to worship feminine principle of the Universe in the form of the mother to remind the teachings of the Taitareeya Upanishad. Essence of the navaratri celebration at social level is to remind & respect all the women, who are the guardians of the family, culture, and national integrity, to take lead in times of crisis to guide the humanity towards the path of social justice, righteousness, equality, love, and divinity. On the day of Dasara, statues of the Goddess Durga which is made by clay are submerged in the river waters. Veda Vyasa is considered as the foremost Guru and Vijayadasami is also celebrated as Vyasa puja. Dasara is the festival of Victory of Good over Bad, God over Devil. Navaratri festival is observed ten days, out of which nine for cleansing one's self of all impurities, in order to experience the divinity within & the last day is dedicated to "worship of weapons (Aayudha Pooja). The weapons to be worshipped are the divine powers & virtues within. When the divine is worshipped in this way, one is bound to progress spiritually. In Bengal, Dasara is celebrated as Durga Puja. Idols of the goddess Durga are worshipped for nine days, and on the tenth day immersed in a river or pond. In Bengal, Assam & Orissa, Durga is also worshipped as Kali Mata as a symbol of Shakti (Power). The stories behind the celebration of Dasara are as follows:

On this day in the Treta Yug, Shri Ram (7th incarnation of Vishnu), killed the great demon Ravan who had abducted Ram's wife Sita to his kingdom of Lanka. Ram, along, with his brother Lakshman follower Hanuman, and an army of monkeys fought a great battle to rescue his wife Sita. The war against Ravan lasted for ten days. Rama had performed "Chandi Hom” and invoked the blessings of Durga to kill Ravana. Durga blessed Rama with the secret to kill Ravana. Ravana was defeated in his own kingdom of Lanka by Rama & the vanarsena. Rama with Sita & Laxman returned victorious to his kingdom of Ayodhya on the Ashwin Shukla dashami. This victory of Rama is since then celebrated as “Vijaya Dashami”. During these 10 days of Dasara, huge idols of Ravana, Kumbhakarna (brother of Ravana) & Meghanad (son of Ravana) are erected and are set on fire by the enthusiastic youth at the sun set. The victory of Durga Mata over Mahishasur Some of the Aasuras (Demons) were very powerful and ambitious, and continually tried to defeat Gods and capture the Heaven. One such Aasura called Mahishasur, who looked like a buffalo, grew very powerful & created havoc on the earth. Under his leadership the Aasuras even defeated the Devas (Gods), all of whom were powerless including Brahma, Vishnu etc… Finally, when the world was getting crushed under Mahishasura's tyranny, the Devas came together & contributed their individual energy to form “Shakti” a single mass of incandescent energy to fight & kill Mahishasur. A very powerful band of lightening dazzled from the mouths of Brahma, Vishnu & Mahesh (Shiva) and a beautiful, magnificent, radiant young virgin with ten hands appeared. All the Gods gave their special weapons to her. This Shakti coalesced in the form of Goddess Durga. Durga with weapons in her ten hands, riding on Lion, who assisted her in the fight, took on Mahishasur. The battle raged for nine days and nights. Finally on the tenth day of Ashwin shukla paksha, the evil demon Mahishasur was defeated & killed by Durga.

Hence Dasara is also known as Navaratra or Durgotsava and is a celebration of victory of Goddess Durga. Durga as Consort of Lord Shiva represents two forms of female energy one mild & protective and the other fierce & destructive. Durga Puja is celebrated with joy all over India, especially West Bengal in worship of Goddess Durga. Singing, dancing, sweets & gaiety are an integral part of the Durga Pooja Festival. Quality of human environment is largely dependent on the availability of water which is unique to our planet. It is a key component in determining the value of our lives. Due to increased population, people are concerned about the quality of water we drink. The World Bank has invested more than USD 16 billion in water since 1993 to maintain its availability. Only one percent of the total volume of water on Earth has been classified as freshwater which is suitable for human use. This small percent is distributed further as surface water (2%) and the rest (98%) as groundwater. Water in many countries such as India, Greece and many other regions is used as a symbol by which to express purity and devotion. Without water, there is no worships of God/Goddess in India. The place of gathering for female in the Indian village is around the wells, ponds, rivers and fountains. In many rural and urban areas of both developed and developing countries, groundwater is most valuable for human consumption since it is less expensive and more reliable than treated water. Groundwater occurs in sediments and bedrock that occur below the surface. It is a part of the global hydro-geological cycle which controls

the distribution of water on Earth. India is gifted with a large reservoir of groundwater which is an important source of water needed for the sustainable development of the country. Contrary to the past, many regions are now facing serious shortages of fresh water due to increased population, the over exploitation of groundwater, pollution problems and pressure to improve living standards. The vigorous urbanization, deforestation, green house gases, and climate changes are also important factors for not access of safe drinking water. Marine population are also in danger due to climate change and pumping untreated effluents, sludge in sea, rivers, and ponds; leaching behaviours of many chemicals used in the production of fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides add extra pressure on ground waters and surface waters. For the last two decades, arsenic concentration in groundwater has created a big problem in our society. Arsenic in groundwater worldwide has quite recently got global community’s attention. In West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Orissa, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and many other provinces of India high arsenic enrichment groundwater has been cited. In addition, problems of arsenic in drinking water in Bangladesh, Taiwan, South East Asian countries, Latin America, Mexico, many states of the USA and other regions have grown recently. Arsenic problem in groundwater has brought crucial problem in the society. In West Bengal, about 0.53 million people may have arsenic related disease. If drinking water contains more than 10 microgram arsenic per litre of water, then contaminated water causes skin pigmentation, keratosis and cancer. It is not only in India and Bangladesh, but many regions of the world. Arsenic problem in drinking water can disturb the socioeconomic conditions of a country. One of the resulting consequences is that married women have been tortured and send back to their parents. People with black spots on their skin are discriminated against in gaining employment. Affected children are not allowed to attend school. The contamination of groundwater is a multidimensional and complex problem and has to be addressed in a holistic way. There are many options for supply

of safe water and the best one has to be adopted to ensure the sustained availability of safe drinking-water. There are many areas where more research are needed and those have to be undertaken on a priority basis.
