Symposium of Music r m i n e d nev Presents.... the bollox! Zane Lowe causes Chaos in Portsmouth! WHAT IS SYMPOSIUM OF MUSIC?
Symposium of Music is primarily a Band Promotion company, dedicated to helping unsigned artists to achieve their full potential. We also assist artists with legal issues, organise events and assist with recording/equipment requirements too. SoM Promo was the brainchild of Dougie Anscombe (oneleggedjockey among the internet forums of Pompey), who pulled in some of the most promising talent Portsmouth could offer in the guise of Matt Taylor, Kitty-Soho and Mike Tyler (pics below…no laughing ;). Together, we have formed and manipulated an idea into a fully fledged company, along with some very gratefully received help, and are achieving what we set out to achieve. The Future
We have some interesting projects in the pipeline, for instance we have the Battle of the Guitarists in January to April, Acoustic Sessions and celebrity showcase events. Keep an eye out on our myspace (address on page 4) for updates on our forthcoming events. We at Symposium of Music are very Would you like your advertisement here?

Chaos @ South Parade Pier, Saturday 7th October. Zane Lowe hits the decks at 11.30pm and the bulging crowd go wild! As part of his Home Taping Tour, Zane visited Portsmouth with Ricky Wilson, front man of the Kaizer Chiefs and produced a set worthy of an award. Playing awesome lip-smacking tracks such as Boy from School by Hot Chip, Dance Dance by Fall Out Boy and a medley of tracks from pretty much every genre of music, The Gaiety Suite was positively
proud to be working with artists like Jon Walbrin (Winner, Showcase 2006), 16 Bronsons, Little London and many others. Mission Statement
Our mission statement is to aim to provide zero budget options to bands and solo artists alike, whilst giving them the best opportunity to be heard and noticed by the widest possible audience.

awash with every man, woman and their respective pets giving it some. The night was a blast from start to finish with Lowe exercising some deft crowd manipulation rarely seen at the pier on any night.
months working in London, I was working at the Music and Video Exchange record store and I got an offer to do some work on a show called Up For It Live. They said they couldnʼt offer me a full time job, but could offer a two-week pilot. That in itself is a rare opportunity. No one in the UK knew who I was and for two-weeks I did this live two hour show, five days a week on MTV. I believe I did the first ever televised interview with Ian Brown after he left the Stone Roses.”
anything else. Itʼs a bit dangerous when you create a genre, then you ask people to choose sides. A lot of magazines are doing this, not just the NME,
We at SoM had the good fortune of meeting Zane backstage and ask him a few questions. Asked where his roots lay in music, Zane described listening to Run DMC, LL Cool J and other hip-hop acts at a young age. For 7-8 years Zane listened solely to Rap/Hiphop music until the arrival of the likes of After the two-week show, Zane went back to working but I feel that if anyone, in the record store then after NME should be asking a couple of months he was the question”. asked back to MTV as a researcher. SoMs Featured Artist
ʻA one-man Radioheadʼ
performing to audiences 6 months ago which, combined with his achievement at Showcase 2006, is testament to his will to show the public that the guitar isnt just plectrums and chords....Coupled with his superb construction and deconstruction ability, SoM believes Jon has bridged a gap in the way music is presented in Portsmouth. Common trend dictates that we should all like rock bands and indie groups, but with talent like this being demonstrated in the way Jon performs, we think a revolution in music taste is about to give us a swift kick to the left arse cheek! Check out Jon Walbrin @ www.myspace.com/jonwalbrin. Jon can be seen at Cafe Parisien being kicked in the bollocks, doubled , next door to The Registry. with the satisfaction of knowing that you were the one doing it. Jon only started
Check out Jonʼs myspace for a sample of his talent, especially his masterpiece ʻA Napoleon Dynamite monemt - ʻEmo is the Wigger of the Worldʼ. As inthis wonderful thing is created from strumentals go, this one compares to the blissful feeling of watching someone this one person who looks so unassumingʼ
These are some of the reviews gven for Pompeyʼs own Jon Walbrin....and SoM Promotions agrees! Jon, 17 from Waterlooville is a solo artist with more potential that Lisa Riley and a series of Weight Watchers adverts! Winner of Portsmouths Showcase 2006 competition, Jon utilises a sampler/looper pedal, a guitar, bow and even a saw (!!) to achieve his original sounding performances. He has been compared with such artists as Jeff Buckley, Sigur Ros, Spaceman 3, Pactrick Wolf and Radiohead.

Lacuna Coil Swamp Portsmouth with Awesome Gig Review by Mikey T.
Lacuna Coil came to the Pyramids, they saw and conquered by the time the show ended.
Events started with support from Poisonblack and it was clear there were mixed feelings about them. In one case, someone was reading a book. Personally, weʼd prefer to take poison than listen to them again but hey! They just did not appeal to us. The time was 9.30pm, and the lights dim. The crowd starts cheering as the reason they parted with their dosh, Lacuna Coil, come on stage.
A solid opening got the audiences attention and gave them what they paid for; few opening songs before the big hitters like Swamped. The audience chanted for them to come back on stage during the interval as soon as they left, returning with an amazing Depeche Mode cover of Enjoy the Silence. A bit for everyone really, and a good solid set, recommended seeing again in gig atmosphere.
Highs - Amazing performance of Swamped and Heavens A Lie - A better than the original Enjoy the Silence. Lows – There not being 1000 Cristina Scabbiaʼs in the world. SOMP Rating *****

Sting – Songs from the Labyrinth Review by Matt Taylor
Like George Michael, the guys here at SOMP pride themselves on being able to listen without prejudice; it would seem that Sting also shares something with Mr. Michael as he has well and truly been caught with his pants firmly round his ankles this time. Enter stage right, Stingʼs latest anomaly Songs from the Labyrinth; a collection of Elizabethan lute tunes by the legendary John Dowland (1563-1626).
Not one for snobbery we were actually looking forward to Stings take on such a masterful songwriter. However, it quickly becomes apparent that there exists a major flaw in this work: Sting himself.
Stings wooden, sand paper style vocals fail to match the colour of the music played by Edin Karamazov and coupled with the almost laughable spoken word cut scenes, Songs from the Labyrinth conjures up images more akin to a The Carpenters Vs. War of the Worlds celebrity death match than that of a serious musical endeavour. Pretence is the key word here and we wouldnʼt mind at all of Sting swiftly took his tantric obstacles and exercised immediate premature evacuation. Highs: Novel, Virtuoso Lute Lows: Sting SOMP Rating **
Iron Maiden – A Matter Of Life And Death Review by Mikey T.
Iron Maiden are back with their longest album to date and at 72 minutes itʼs for true Iron Maiden fans. There are criticisms to be made about any album, but with this release, there are few. A high point is there are no weak songs on the album. The best tracks in our opinion are Benjamin Breeg and These Colours Donʼt Run.
It does not need to be said that “A Matter of Life and Death” is a well arranged piece, but lacking in the riff-ability of other albums. It can also be said it is pale in comparison to the back catalogue. Suffice to say, when your CV contains albums such as The Number of the Beast and Powerslave, its not such a terrible thing to say this album didnʼt quite measure up.
So Iron Maiden return with their 14th studio offering, and after several listens, it makes us think two things. Firstly, we canʼt wait till 23rd December when they appear at Earls Court. Secondly, when is the next album out?
Highs: Not one weak track - Amazing tracks like The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg. Lows: Not as good as previous offerings. - Lacking in the riff ability of previous albums. SOMP Rating: ****
