Solving for a Variable Main Goal: We want to move the variables all to one side and the constants all to the other. Ex: We would like to turn something like 3x+4=13
into
x=3
How do we do this? We want to keep our equation balanced at all
times In other words, we want to make sure we do the same operation on both sides of the equation: Ex:
x+3= 5
−3 −3 x=2
Example
5 x − 7 = 23 +7 +7 5 x = 30 ÷5 ÷5 x=6
