Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! (FRFI) is the only paper on the British left which regularly reports on and supports the struggles of prisoners within British gaols. For 30 years FRFI has carried news from inside the institutions which are at the sharp end of the state’s attack on the working class.

This work began in the1970s with our support for those incarcerated because of the war for Irish national liberation. The Irish prisoners alerted us to the struggles of other prisoners – against wrongful convictions, against the racism of the system and against the daily brutality and injustice in British prisons.

Reported extensively on all the major prison uprisings – in particular Strangeways in 1990 Covered all major changes in the law and other developments that affect prisoners Carried in-depth interviews with framed prisoners - such as John Walker (Birmingham Six), Raphael Rowe (M25 Three), Satpal Ram, John Kamara - during their campaigns and after their release Supported political prisoners fighting for Irish, Palestinian, Kurdish and Kashmiri self-determination Supported those imprisoned because of state attacks, such as striking miners, Poll Tax non-payers, anti-fascist and anti-capitalist demonstrators Highlighted campaigns against deaths in custody. From 2004 until her death in 2008 we published regular articles by Pauline Campbell, who, following the death of her daughter in Styal prison, mounted a concerted campaign of direct action outside prisons where women died.
