Abengoa Solar Commitment Our World Tomorrow

…in Abengoa we think that it is time to develop and apply solutions In the US, The International Energy Agency predicts for 2030…

An augment of 36% in CO2 emissions

An increase of 34 % on world energy demand

That 82% of the primary energy supply will be sourced from fossil fuels

It is critical to foster the rational use of energy and the adoption of renewable energies to reduce climate change and ensure sustainable development Reference: IEA

Abengoa Solar Commitment The Solution for Power Generation

The energy of the future will be based on the sun… 9 Sustainable development – Clean, low emissions and distribution technology 9 Mature solar technology – This technology has been in use for over 20 years, providing excellent performance. It has extremely high potential for cost reduction. 9 Still more expensive than fossil but… it will soon be competitor with conventional (learning curve and CO2 penalties) 9 Substitute for fossil fuels – The solution to economic volatility, drought and carbon limits 9 Favorable policies – Driven by climate and energy security, either feed-in or percent targets. 9 Can be managed to meet base and peak demand – Electricity that is generated during the day can be stored and is available day and night

The Technology

… dealing with key technologies within the solar field… Concentrating Solar Power

Operating principle: generally speaking, CSP technology is based in solar radiation concentration to produce steam or hot air which could then be used in conventional electric plants. Solar energy capture, which has a relatively low density, is one of the main challenges in the development of solar plants. For concentration, most concentrating systems use mirrors with high reflectivity

Main components Oil High pressure water or air

Concentrator: different optical elements as mirrors, concentrate the solar rays on a point or a line where the receiver is located.

Receiver: the receiver collects the concentrated solar rays and transfers the energy to a heat transfer fluid.

Evaporator:In the evaporator the heat transfer fluid heats the water which becomes steam

Turbine:the steam moves the turbine which produces electricity as in conventional methods . Receiver

Abengoa Solar Today The Technology

… dealing with key technology within the solar field… Storage The most used technologies are the molten salt storage system and the steam storage system. Operating principle: two molten salt tanks are used • System is charged by taking hot HTF from the solar field and running it through the storage heat exchangers. Simultaneously, cold molten-salt is taken from the cold storage tank and run “counter-current” through the heat exchangers • When electricity is needed, the system simply operates in reverse to reheat the solar HTF, which generates steam to run the power plant.

Hybridization The most used technology is ISCC= Integrated Solar Combined Cycle ISCC= Combined cycle + Solar field Operating principle: the heat coming from the solar field is used as extra energy for steam production on the combine cycle. Fuel is partially substituted by solar energy

ABENGOA SOLAR

Abengoa Solar Today The Technology

… dealing with key technologies within the solar field… Photovoltaic technology Operating principle: photovoltaic (PV) cells use semiconductors to produce electricity. The cell absorbs solar radiation, which excites the electrons inside the cell. A semiconductor must have at least two electric fields. When an electron excited by solar energy leaves its electric field, it seeks to return to its original electric field. In order to do so, it must pass through an external circuit, producing electricity. This is referred to as the photovoltaic effect.

Main components •Optics: different optical elements, such as mirrors and Fresnel lenses, are used to concentrate solar radiation onto a point where a PV cell is located.

Alterning current

Alterning current

•Photovoltaic Cell: the photovoltaic cell is the semiconductor used to produce the photovoltaic effect •Inverter: since the photovoltaic effect produces direct current (DC), an inverter must be used to change it to alternating current (AC) •Solar Tracker: to enhance the system’s efficiency, the solar tracker orientates the photovoltaic module towards the Sun
