EMC SnapView
EMC SnapView EMC® SnapView™ software helps make applications and data accessible when and where you need them by creating mountable snapshots or full-copy clones of production data on your CLARiiON® array. The process is transparent to the primary server, and the resulting data copy is available to any secondary server with appropriate access privilege. EMC SnapView software is designed to: • Increase application availability, reduce scheduled downtime • Improve data recovery and application consistency • Minimize recovery time by creating frequent point-in-time images • Integrate with Microsoft® Exchange®, SQL Server™, and Oracle® environments • Be easily managed with EMC Navisphere® Management Suite Better backups: It's all about information access In the global economy, information must be accessible all the time. If your data is unavailable, it’s not working for you, processing transactions and serving your customers, that’s money lost. SnapView software can help you back up faster and more flexibly, so you can be up and serving customers for more hours of the day. Reduce backup windows to just seconds using snapshot copies and keep applications online and productive. You can also backup more frequently for daily disaster protection.

Faster application development, reliable testing and more EMC® SnapView™ lets you create multiple copies of production data. The same local copy of data that can be presented to a backup utility for processing can also be presented, readable and writable, to development hosts for rapid application development and testing. SnapView can help you reduce development time and enhance reliability by testing applications with current data. With multiple data copies, you can run testing, decision support, debugging or routine maintenance in parallel. How SnapView works SnapView lets system administrators create, in background mode, a mountable snapshot or full-copy clone/BCV of production data. The process, handled on the Dell/EMC array, is transparent to the primary server, yet the resulting data is available to any secondary server with the appropriate access privileges. When you start a SnapView snapshot session, the snapshot becomes active and I/O to the source LUN continues. When the production server issues a write to any data in the source LUN being snapped, SnapView implements a copy-on-first-write algorithm to copy the original block into a private area on the array before modifying the original data. This private area is called the SnapView Save Area. For any changed block, the copy happens only once, the first time the block is modified. A snapshot is composed of all the unchanged blocks in the source LUN, plus the blocks that have been written into the SnapView Save Area. The SnapView Save Area contains only the original data blocks written to it when those blocks were about to be changed in the source LUN. Thus, the storage capacity required to implement SnapView is merely a fraction of the size of the source LUN. The snapshot process allows I/O to continue to the production file system with no disruption in service, while other applications and servers have complete access to the snapshot of the data, if permissions allow. The resulting snapshot is fully readable and writable by a secondary server. SnapView also supports a feature called snapshot rollback. Snapshot rollback enables you to restore snapshots directly to production volumes.

Alternatively, you can use SnapView™ to create a full-image copy of your volume and present it to a secondary

server as a unique LUN. This full-image copy is called a business continuance volume (BCV) or clone. SnapView
Dell™ Services can deliver the services you need to realize the full value of your IT investment. Complementing our award-winning products, these IT infrastructure services incorporate operational excellence, accountability and value.
can track all changed blocks and incrementally re-establish the BCV—copying only changed tracks to the BCV—to bring it back into sync with the original. You can also incrementally restore the image from the BCV back to the original volume. Clones/BCVs differ from snapshots in that they are physically separate copies of your data—no portion is shared between the original and the clone/BCV volumes. Physical or logical loss of data on the original will not affect the data contained in the clone/BCV, or vice versa.
By utilizing our best practices, proven processes and expertise in implementing standards-based technologies, we can help strengthen your IT infrastructure and enable you to adopt evolving technologies. Whether you need support, deployment, asset management, training, certification, planning or professional services – individually or bundled as a total solution – you can count on Dell. Strengthening Your IT Infrastructure
SnapView can manage up to eight clones/BCVs and eight snapshot copies of a volume. In addition, SnapView allows you to have up to eight snapshots of each clone/BCV you’ve made. This greatly expands the number of data replicas you can generate and use—for backups, application development, testing, decision support—

SnapView™ now offers a new feature called consistent split/restore. Consistent split/restore helps ensure consistency of data across multiple interrelated LUNs when you are creating a SnapView snapshot or clone of those LUNs. If you’re creating snapshots or clones in an environment with multiple interrelated databases or applications, or applications without a native hot-backup feature, consistent split/restore can help you ensure data integrity. You can have up to 8 LUNs in a consistent split/restore on CX300, CX400, and CX500 storage system and up to 16 LUNs in a consistent split/restore on CX600 and CX700 systems. All LUNs in a consistent split/restore operation must reside in the same CX array. SnapView works with industry-standard backup and recovery software such as EMC® LEGATO® NetWorker™ and VERITAS® NetBackup™. Because you use a secondary server to access the SnapView replica, no changes to the backup software are needed. SnapView also integrates seamlessly with Dell/EMC-array-based remote replication products including SAN Copy™, MirrorView™/Synchronous and MirrorView/Asynchronous. Simplified management EMC Navisphere® Management Suite allows you to manage all Dell/EMC-related activities—from system management to all your SnapView, MirrorView and SAN Copy sessions—using a centralized Web browser. EMC Replication Manager provides application-centric management of replicas including SnapView snapshots and clone/BCVs, and integrates SnapView with leading industry applications such as Microsoft® SQL, Microsoft® Exchange and Oracle®. Replication Manager software uses the Microsoft® VDI Interface and the Microsoft® VSS Interface for creation and restoration of SnapView replicas of SQL Server and Exchange 2003 respectively. As a result, SQL and Exchange administrators can create SnapView replicas of their application data without any disruption to their production environment.
