SURVEY OF HOUSING ALTERNATIVES There are many different housing alternatives available on or near the SMU campus, including graduate school residence halls, university-owned housing, apartments, townhouses, condominiums, duplexes, and single-family homes. We hope this information will provide you with a starting point in your search. Included under some listings are students' comments. SMU has not made any effort to verify any of the statements. These comments should be read as opinions of individual students. Please note this information was compiled in Spring 2008 and is subject to change.
GRADUATE RESIDENCE
HALLS
SMU offers two graduate residence halls on campus: Martin and Hawk Halls. Martin Hall, an efficiency apartment hall, houses single and married graduate students. Hawk Hall, a onebedroom apartment facility, houses married students or students with children in one-bedroom apartments. • Both residence hall apartments are furnished with a bed, desk and a dre~ser and include a closet, kitchenette, bathroom and telephone. Each residence hall has a live-in staff member who serves as the hall director. Social and educational programming is offered in all halls. All residence halls have a lounge area with color TV. Laundry facilities are also located in each builclillg. Room rent includes local telephone service, voice mail, and Ethernet connections to the University's computer system. Meal plans are available, but not required. All residence halls are air-conditioned and are smoke-free. The Housing contract is for the entire academic year (roughly mid-August to mid-May). Academic year room rates for 2007-2008 range from $6,200 to $7,350. A completed housing application must be filed with the SMU Department of Residence Life and Student Housing. Space for graduate students on campus is very limited. All applicants are placed on a waiting list and assignments are made during the summer. Housing for graduate students is NOT guaranteed. UNIVERSITY-OWNED
HOUSING
SMU also owns and manages off-campus apartments, which are available to graduate students. These apartments are convenient to campus and range in accommodations and cost. They are located in the Highland Park Independent School District. Hillcrest Manor is reserved for law students and is located across from the Law School. Student comments: o "One forgotten apartment resource is the campus apartments. I live in Hillcrest Manor apartments [an apartment building reserved for law students], which are located righc across the street from the law school (you don't have to drive to campus). On many occasions I have woken up 20 minutes before class and still make it on time. Plus it's pretty cheap, bills are paid, the walls are thick, and the space is generous. However, it's pretty ugly and there isn't a poo!." o "I live in Hillcrest Manor and I love it. The convenience of living so close to campus is priceless. Plus, my rent is really good." o "I live in the Hillcrest Manor apartment complex. The one thing I can say is you just can't beat living across the stteet from the law schoo!' You will really appreciate it the first year. Plus, for apartments in this area it is relatively inexpensive. The apartments are older, but the maintenance people are very quick and friendly."
APARTMENTS Many students live off-campus in non-SMU housing. Many have used an apartment locator service to help them locate housing. If you use a locator service, be sure there is no charge to you. Most locator service fees are paid by the apartment complex. Many of our students have used and recommend the "Apartment Selector" (www.aptse1ector.com; 800-479-8744; 214-750-8744) or "Mustang Leasing Company" [provides a cash rebate] (www.mustangleasing.com; e-mail: [email protected]; 866-721-PONY; 214-521-P01'.TY; 6060 N. "MoveFreeAmerica" is an apartment locating and moving service that pays for your move or provides a cash rebate (e-mail: [email protected]; 214-754-9988). Please tell any of these companies that you are an SMU Dedman School of Law student. Also, some of the very nice downtown. apartments (particularly the JPI properties) have an agreement that they will allocate twenty percent of their units to an Affordable Housing program with extremely low rent. Obviously, this is not advertised as waiting lists can get long. Scholarships and school loans are accepted as proof of income. Law students nsually qualify due to their higher tuition. Students should ask (as early as possible) whether apartments have such a program and if they can be put on the waiting list. The amount saved on rent can be significant.
Information on several apartment complexes is listed on the follo\ving pages. The apartments are grouped by location. There are many other apartment complexes in these areas; this information is just a starting point. Remember to ask about move-in specials and discounts for students.

The monthly rent is comparable to the Village properties, but the neighborhood is much more quiet."

"I would definitely recommend the Phoenix to future students. The location is great (close to school, shopping, highway access). The management office is very responsive to problems (although there have not been many problems to speak of) and the facilities are well taken care of (plus there is covered parC".ing).It may be a bit on the pricey side, but they have good move-in specials. Quite a few law students live there, actually." "The initial process of looking at the property, filling out forms and getting the lease done went off without a hitch. I got a great deal on rent and they are putting in a washer and-dryer for me at no charge. In addition, because I am an SMU law student, I received an extra 5% off the rent and a free cleaning or car detailing once a month. I've rented quite a few apartments and have to say that the office staff is by fat the most accommodating yet."

SURVEY OF HOUSING ALTERNATIVES There are many different housing alternatives available on or near the SMU campus, including graduate school residence halls, university-owned housing, apartments, townhouses, condominiums, duplexes, and single-family homes. We hope this information will provide you with a starting point in your search. Included under some listings are students' comments. SMU has not made any effort to verify any of the statements. These comments should be read as opinions of individual students. Please note this information was compiled in Spring 2008 and is subject to change.
GRADUATE RESIDENCE
HALLS
SMU offers two graduate residence halls on campus: Martin and Hawk Halls. Martin Hall, an efficiency apartment hall, houses single and married graduate students. Hawk Hall, a onebedroom apartment facility, houses married students or students with children in one-bedroom apartments. • Both residence hall apartments are furnished with a bed, desk and a dre~ser and include a closet, kitchenette, bathroom and telephone. Each residence hall has a live-in staff member who serves as the hall director. Social and educational programming is offered in all halls. All residence halls have a lounge area with color TV. Laundry facilities are also located in each builclillg. Room rent includes local telephone service, voice mail, and Ethernet connections to the University's computer system. Meal plans are available, but not required. All residence halls are air-conditioned and are smoke-free. The Housing contract is for the entire academic year (roughly mid-August to mid-May). Academic year room rates for 2007-2008 range from $6,200 to $7,350. A completed housing application must be filed with the SMU Department of Residence Life and Student Housing. Space for graduate students on campus is very limited. All applicants are placed on a waiting list and assignments are made during the summer. Housing for graduate students is NOT guaranteed. Student comments: o "One forgotten apartment resource is the campus apartments. I live in Hillcrest Manor apartments [an apartment building reserved for law students], which are located righc across the street from the law school (you don't have to drive to campus). On many occasions I have woken up 20 minutes before class and still make it on time. Plus it's pretty cheap, bills are paid, the walls are thick, and the space is generous. However, it's pretty ugly and there isn't a poo!." o "I live in Hillcrest Manor and I love it. The convenience of living so close to campus is priceless. Plus, my rent is really good." o "I live in the Hillcrest Manor apartment complex. The one thing I can say is you just can't beat living across the stteet from the law schoo!' APARTMENTS Many students live off-campus in non-SMU housing. Many have used an apartment locator service to help them locate housing. If you use a locator service, be sure there is no charge to you. Most locator service fees are paid by the apartment complex. Please tell any of these companies that you are an SMU Dedman School of Law student. Also, some of the very nice downtown. apartments (particularly the JPI properties) have an agreement that they will allocate twenty percent of their units to an Affordable Housing program with extremely low rent. Obviously, this is not advertised as waiting lists can get long. Scholarships and school loans are accepted as proof of income. Law students nsually qualify due to their higher tuition. Students should ask (as early as possible) whether apartments have such a program and if they can be put on the waiting list. The amount saved on rent can be significant.
